FRIDAY. JULY 29 1892.
Two more years of Hogg and this
supplemented possibly by six years
of him in the national senate. Truly
the cup of the state’s bitterness is
more than she should be asked to
drink.
Ihe democrats ai e now discussing
the possibility of carrying the elec-
tion without New York. This means
they have no hope of carrying New
York.
The suicide attempts and the mow-
ing machine accidents are unusually
brisk this hot weather. It appears
that there is something In the at-
mosphere with the thermometer well
up in the nineties that renders a man
disgusted with life and he naturally
inclines to shake the habit of breath-
ing
The blistering weather of the last
few days is curling corn fearfully In
Kansas and Nebraska and unless
there is a change very soon there will
bean immense shortage in the ex-
pected crop
The Kansas fusion of democrats
and third party people has consoli-
dated republican feeling and action
to an extent hardly expected. The
result will be an overwhelming re-
publican victory
The late judgeship of the U. 8.
supreme court falls to the lot of an-
other of that famous Yale class of 53.
Justices Brown and Brewer as well
as tshlras belong to that class which
also numbers Chauncey Depew among
its members.
Ten per cent money has gone glim-
mering in the west. At Kansas City
loans are made at the bank at six
per cent and in central Kansas at
from seven to eight per cent where
heretofore from ten to twelve percent
has been charged. This era of cheap-
er money has come to stay.
There are udvices that Cleveland
is trying to secure Tammany’s sup
port by promises to Influence his
mugwump friends not to oppose the
disreputable and scandalous control
of local affairs in New York City by
the corrupt Tammany ring.
The defence presented at the
Mitchell trial in Memphis opens a
very wide field for the specialist in
mental disease and emphasizes the
ignorance that prevails as to mental
disease particularly in Its relations
to sexual feeling. Verily we are all
of us more or less cracked.
The lowa third party is reading
the democracy a lesson in political
consistency and refusing to fuse with
them either in state or in local elec-
tions. Democracy in lowa is not re-
spectable in a third party man’s eyes.
Cleveland knows hie danger from
Tammany. The people should know
what consideration he is willing to
offer for its support.
The law is enacted aud tne policy
of this government defined as to the
treatment meted out to Canada for
her disregard of the treaties that she
has entered into with this country.
In the future she faces her responsi-
bility; she will either fish or cut bait
and the choice is all her own.
There will be no soft snap for the
democratic representatives in congress
after this body with Its unwieldly
bourbon majority Is dissolved. Never
again will tne democrats have such
an opportunity to do their wlil with
the legislation of the nation as they
have had this session.
The repeal of the tariff laws is call-
ed for by the unthinking democratic
press. This Is in effect to call for
the destruction of American manu-
factures and the country will never
consent tocommit industrial suicide
in this fashion. The democracy make
an impossible demand and the
people so understand it.
The very situation of this continent
geographically demonstrates that it
was intended to be Independent of
the other great divisions of the earth.
It contains within itself all the pro-
ducts of the earth or wanting these
a climate and soil that will supply
them to intelligent culture.
The lowa republicans that have
been training in the prohibition camp
are turning their forces to the aid of
the grand old party of ideas this cam-
paign and will help fight the combi-
nations of the democracy and the
third party. The democracy can-
not foreclose that mortgage on lowa
this fall.
There is no agreement possible
between the followers of Hogg and
C'ark only as one is outside of the
statehouse pen and the other Inside.
They can only agree to differ and it
is not altogether certain that they
will do even that.
Galveston News thinks that the
hlvp of the Texas democracy is about
ready to swarm. Houston is prepar-
ing tw’o gum blocks for the two
swarms but they will be a hot and
angry crowd
There are two things tor which
this country has no use; the regula-
tion of capitalists by anarchists and
the regulation of laborers by the
military arm. There are no two
opinions about this
Protection of American industry
supplemented by wise reciprocity
measures benefits every class in this
countr except the wealthy who im-
port their wearing apparel and house
decorations.
The more the nation supplies its
own demands out of its own indus-
trial works ths more surely it increas-
es wealth for all the people for it be-
comes in that act its own market and
its own supply.
Exports of domestic merchandise
for the fiscal year 1892 were $1015-
789607. This is the first year they
ever attained the sura of a billion
dollars. This is a billion dollar
country.
The statistician has discovered that
seven-eights of all the bread eaten in
London is made from American flour.
This shows to what an extent the old
dame is dependent on her former
family.
In determining to hold her usual
fair at Nizhni Novgorod despite the
cholera epidemic Russia has shown
an utter disregard for the nealth of
European Russia. There are no san-
itary regulations in force in the
town. The population swelled many
times beyond its usual number of in-
habitants is in contusion and a state
of selge has been established. The
whole region of central Russia is in
fact a breeding plague and the gov-
ernment Is doing little or nothing to
prevent the pestilence from spreading
all over two continents. There Is no
attempt to seperate the infected from
those who are in health; the passage
of immigrants and travelers from the
infected districts in unimpeded and
the scourge is left to find its own way
from place to place ever working
westward. If any cheek is given to its
progress it will be on the western
limits of the Russian empire where
the central European nations must
make a stand against its crossing the
borders. This to some extent is being
done but it is not in human power to
prevent its sweeping over Europe
with the fearful impetus It has gained
I while traversing Russian territory.
Cheaper rates of interest at the
west mean reduction of mortgages
and these in turn stand for increasing
prosperity and the increased vote of
the republican party which seem to
stand and fail together.
The democracy in congress have
not the courage of their declarations
in the platform put forth at Chicago.
Their declaration of the unconstitu-
tionality of protection was all for
campaign effect and was sounder-
stood. If the democrats in congress
had passed a free trade bill pure and
simple it would haveoost them every
northern state and one-half of the
solid south.
The Canadians in rhe northwest
are again in trouble with Uncle Bam
for smuggling Chinese Into the
Ouited States. Canadian John is
making the mistake of his life in pro-
voking this country into retaliation.
Heretofore that overgrown lout has
been permitted his own way because
it was not desirable to quarrel with
a spoiled youth but that time has
passed and John is being called down.
If Canada is wise she will call a halt
before this country proceeds to ex-
tremities.
The instructed vote of the state so
far is more than three to one in favor
of Hogg. Giving Clark and Hogg all
that was originally instructed for
them that is ruling out all contests
Clark has 269 votes against 558 lor
Hogg. That Clark will be given all
of these Is not probable for 107 of
them are contested while of the 558
for Hogg only 28 are contested.
Allowing the figures to be as presen-
ted Hogg lacks 72 of his two thirds
while Clark lacks 61 of enough to
lock the convention. Taking the
situation as a whole considering the
ratio of the whole vote that each has
with the proportion of contested vote
and there is not one chance in a
hundred that the Clark men can lock
the convention or prevent the nomi-
nation of Hogg on the first ballot.
Hogg bosses the pen.
Deacon is getting no sympathy in
France. He took matters too leisurely
tosuit the Frenchwhocorsider that he
is not wholly blameless for his wife's
last escapade and bis petition for
pardon is denied. He will serve out
his sentence aud be deported from
the country.
Wendell Phillips said that de-
feat was education but there is very
little hope of any educational process
for Hogg notwithstanding that he so
lamentably needsit on his own ac
count aud for the good of the state.
I'he democracy have not yet come to
an unaerstaudiug of their political
crime in their persistent effort to con-
tinue the Hogg embargo on progress
in ibis state.
In no state in tbe Union are the re-
publicans making more heroic at-
tempts to redeem themselves from
democratic misrule than in Missouri
and they are buoyed up with reason-
able hope of success.
The proposition to increase the
pensions of the Mexican war veterans
to $l2 per month will not meet with
any opposition from any of the great
political parties. The bill wins on
its merits.
The presidents of the Central and
South American republics are learn-
ing wisdom by experience and now
at the beating of the revolutionary
dram they put themselves and their
available cash in a foreign country
with the utmost dispatch leaving the
revolutionists to fight It out among
themselves.
The treatment that Deacon is
receiving in France Indicates that
public sentiment is changing as to
tne seduction of married women. The
tact is that there is no such a thing
and in all such eases the woman Is
equally culpable with the man. To
murder a flirting man because a flirt-
ing wife has made a fool of her hus-
band and become untrue is not going
to be as popular in tbe future as it
has been in the past. Courts of jus-
tice will look on such killing as mur-
der and render their verdicts accord-
ingly.
Canada is becoming alarmed at
the invasion of tbe country by the
Chinese. They are moving in a body
into all the cities of Ontario and in
such numbers as to create consterna-
tion. As the laws against them m
this country become operative they
will be forced aoross the Canadian
border in great numbers and John
will find when it is everlastingly too
late that his dirty little speculation
for crossing them into tbe United
States at $5O a head was one of the
poorest that he has lately engaged in.
