Such Was IHO2 to say Nothing of
A'leged Miracles and Monsteis.
Boston Transcript:
Undoubtedly 1892 will be long re
membered iu hutory as a year of
miracles a twelve-m mtn in wtiich
more impossibilities oecured and the
unexpected happened otteuer than ill
any other corresponding period ot
which there is record. Politicians
who left everything to the intelli-
gence of the American people were
SUtpriced and paine I at the result ot
the * leaving ” I’he impossibilities ot
Ihousaiuls of MaesacbUcella Repub
iicane voting for two Governors at
once and thou-aiids of Ohio D-mo
crats throwing away their votes lor
t weiuytwo electors and working like
Heavers to choose nun have oocured.
These things were so generally c >u
ced. d to be imp issible that the un-
expected becomes a matter of cnirse
and the travelers’ tale* that are find-
ing their way into the newspapers
cause no ripple ut excitement beyond
the headlines.
One of our contemporaries pub-
lietied a tale which in either years
would have been called startling
about an Indian failing into a spring
iu Montana and coming to light again
by erberging Irom anotner spring tn
British Columbia 200 miles distant.
Of course the unfortunate Iridian
died of fatigue in traveling 200 miles
underground and science is thereby
deprived of the data necessary to de-
termine the commercial value of this
eubterranbau waterway.
A year of miracles is naturally a
year of monsters and we are not sur-
prised at reading that a sort of water
dragon has been making havoc with
travelers in Idaho This monster
caught a traveler who was bathing in
Lake Cbelou and was dragged ashore.
The said monster then and there
clung to the aforesaid bather and re-
sisted all attempts to rescue him made
by the other travelers. Stretching
its huge wings the monster flew up
iu the air and then plunged down iu-
to Lake Chelon with the uuiortunate
bather whom he devoured at leisure
People wbo may be curious about
monsters will be pleased at learning
that this Idaho monster bad the legs
and body of an alligator with tne
bead and eyes of a serpent anti huge
wings being altogether a most terri-
ble wild fowl. In general it may be
described as resembling the great
monster of the Mojave Desert whose
infrequent appearances are graphical
ly coronlclea in the animal depart-
ment ot the St. Louis Globe Demo-
crat.
It will doubtless occur to the reader
that one has beard but little since
Cotton Mather’s days of the mons ers
and miracles of New England. 'This
is not due to any lack ot versatility
in the animals oi New Englandbut i«
traceable to the deep-rooted incred-
ulity ot the people and the operations
ot the McKinley bill. Our animals
have proleau capabilities quite equal
to those of the West and can as read-
ily take strange unheard-of shape
The great enow snake of Northern
New Hampshire invisible to the
members ot the Dartmouth faculty
but seen by students making their
way across the campus late at night
is a familiar instance.
Cottou Mather did not ae? the two-
headed snake of Cape mn but be
heard of it which is mich rhe same
thing. It might be seen by some
people under certain conditions to
day. Anybody who sees tiie winged
wolves of the Kennebec chasing the
wild geese as they fly Southward will
never forget the sight. It is oneot
the strangest in nature. Flying
squirrels abound in our New England
forests which are also full ot bears
and other creatures too numerous to
mention.
At this moment a mysterious ani
trial believed to be a Canadian lynx is
thought to be haunting the woods
between Brookline and Newton. Sev-
eral persons have seen it and it is
said to have broken up a session ot
the Brookline Browning club ffiy
howling derisively under the window
Just as an expert was explaining that
the Flight of the Duchess meant the
very reverse of what the ordinary ac-
ceptance of the English language
would imply. The animals of New
England are physically the equals
and intellectually the superiors ot
those of the west and South.
Racing in England.
Horse racing seems to be steadily
on the increase in England. The
number ot horses that ran during last
season was greater than iu any pre-
vious year. This was the case in re-
gard to animals of ail ages. Until
1891 the total ot 2 year olds had
never reached four figures but in
that year as many as 1062 competed
and last year 1096—only four short of
1100—were sent to the poet. The 3-
year-old figures have risen in a re-
markable way since 1889 when 523
ran increasing io 608 next year 641
in 1891 and 728 in the last returns
There were 333 4-years-old out and
of older animals of 5 and upwards
there were 362. agaiust 310 in 1891 and
288 the year before. In all 2559
horses ran for the £486 556 12 which
is the total of the stakes won under
Jockey Club rules. These figures
show that the turf is powerfully sup-
ported but there is email cause for
congratulation. A very small pro-
portion of owners of race horses are
actuated by loveof genuine eport or a
desire to further the professed object
ot racelng—the improvement in tbe
breed of horses. The great majority
of tbem race as a mere matter ot bust-
nesß and are not by any mbaus too
scrupulous as to tbe metaods by
which their money Is made.
