POLITICAL SCRAPS.
[By our Democratic Contributor.)
The Lampasas Houston Austin and.
Kerrville conventions are too recent to be
forgotten; In each of these places the
democracy of Nan Antonio was and veiy
properly so regarded as an unhealthy ar-
ticle. It will be a long time before either
ot the old parties will regain their former
purity after their several Illegal unions
for political prostitution aud to the dis-
gu t of their honest adherents.
The republican party has one advan-
vantage. it has divided itself only in
“whites” and “blacks” while the
democrats had three factions each
claiming to have the Simon-puie
faith. It is to this state of affairs
that wo owe the absence ot any con ven
tlons now on the eve of our city election:
no guide to the anxious voter no advice
or instruction from a party standpoint Is
given to those who would redeem their
paties if tney conid;and the only safe thing
left them is to jo to the poll* vote
fol the ablest men for men who can pre-
sent tot ho world a clean administration
of the biffgest city in Texas. Il is not be-
lieved that either of our candidates for
mayor want a continuance of a b >ard of
aiderman that has been immortalized by
its subs rviency and its rejoicings In the
name of the faithful ten.
Our solonsat Austin are setting a bad
example for useless expenditures 16000
copies c.f defences of the car stable plat-
form are a heavy infliction on the people
of Texas.
Captain Shardein the candidate for
mayor is moving around quite lively
among his friends today.
The division among the Mexican vote
Is growing wider.
The race between the mayoralty candi-
dates is pretty well settled ftpon but who
is io be city collector?
It's Shardein or Paschal but who do
the people want for city treasurer?
Shardein or Paschal for mayor but who
will hold the money bags?
Gustav Frasch gives satisfaction for
assessor but how about the city clerk
street commissioner etc.?
N-xt week the pot will begin to boil
and the boys will begin to holler for
their favorites.
This should be a clean business cam-
paign. No mud-throwing is necessary.
Heck Thomas says he Is a Paschal man
but wants io see a full tickll put out.
Disorderly variety shows are Hable to a
fine of slou to KOO; and II would be ad-
vhable for the proprietors of same to
get on the right side in this election.
Subscribe for the Light and keep up
with all the latest news.
Tie Independent American vote will
setile the question this time; who will be
street commissioner?
The Italian vote is expected to be cast
for Quasso; but who will be market
master?
Joe Beckman will make us a good ai-
derman.
With an independent mayor and able
city council a good city marshal can be
selected.
It is a little too early for the blood-
suckers to hang around the court house.
The “sport” who shoots off his mouth
too loud in this campaign is liable to get
scorched after the election is over. Look
Out boys. • _

Should be More Of fill.
There seems to be a necessity for some
regulation for the protection of pedes-
trians from the rash and rushing bicycle.
These wheels especially those with
cushion tires are practically noiseless on
the wood pavement and before any one
realises it the machine is upon them.
Tims it is that several persons have been
knocked down and some badly bruised. It
is time that the riders ring the bell but
this is often done too late to avoid a col-
lisiou the impression being with some
riders that the road belongs to them and
that pedestrians should not only see them
but get out of the way.
SOCIAL EVENTS.
The Sunset Social club gave quite an
enjoyable dance at Muth's Garden last
night which was attended by about forty
young people. The music of Artzt’s band
was heard and dancing was the main
feature lasting until rather a late hour
when all repaired to their respective
homes having spent a few gratifying
hours.
At the pleasant home of Mr. Charles
Artzt on Mesquite street last night a
social party was given. Music was the
main feature and a pleasant timo was had
by all who attended.
Miss Lockwood daughter of Mayor
Lockwood gave a party at her parents’
home on Avenue D. last night which
was well attended and very enjoyable.
Miss Minnie Groben entertained a fe#
of her friends at her home on Water
street last night. Dancing was indulged
in.
A Bad Accident
But not so bad as it might have been.
Mr P K Birdwell while riding on
Avenue D. last evening punctured
the tire of his new Kenwood Bicycle
but owing to the simple manner In
which the tire is wade be was only
SIXTEEN MINUTES getting it repaired

having to walk back to a repair shop.
