THE MURDER SIFTED.
Two Men in Jail Charged With the
Crime.
The Light which was the only paper
that published the item on yesterday
gave the news of a dastardly murder com
mitted near Elmendorf station in which
Tomas Ortiz was the victim but the de-
tails were then meagre. Last evening
Sheriff John P. Campbell of Bexar coun-
ty returned from the scene of the trage-
dy. bringing two prisoners accused of tire
crime and giving the particulars of the
affair.
It' Seems that where the tragedy oc-
curred at Montez' Bend on the Calaveras
about-} miles from Elmendorf is a small
Pueblo or Mexican settlement where the
deceased lived in’a small shanty near the
house of two women a mother about 45
years old. and her daughter about 20.
Both women claim to have been married
to Ortiz who had lived with them both
but recently separated from them. lie
seemed to have been very much attached
to the younger one. of w'hom he was very
jealous especially recently since a young
and fine looking chap named Leonardo
De Olioswho came here from Mexico lias
been showing her attentions. De Olios was
very thick with a neighbor named Felipe
Guerrera.who was also very intimate with
the two women. He got Guerrera to invite
Ortiz to Guerrera's house and while Or-
tiz was in the act of examining some
beans that were being prepared for sup-
per on Sunday night shot him through
the head with two large musket balls. De
Olios fired from the outside through the
crack between the boards of the house
and instantly killed his victim. Guerre-
ra then notified Montez a man living
some distance off who sent for the con-
stable. In the mean time lie Olios ran
across some newly plowed ground mak-
ing some very plain tracks and reached
his house by making a widedetour. When
asked about the murder. De Olios said
that he had met the deceased at the
house of the two women at 5:30 o'clock p.
m. and left him tnere with Guerrera at
6:30 and went home where he had staid
and heard nothing of the shot or the
tragedy The shoes worn by De Olios
were placed in. and exactly fitted the
tracks made across the tield. Guerrera.
who told conflicting stories was arrested
as accessory and De Olios principal and
they together with the body of the mur-
dered man were brought here.
The body was buried this morning from
the residence of a nephew of the deceas-
ed who resides atlls Matamoras street.
The two men Guerrera and De Olios wen-
locked upin the county jail and the grand
jury will proceed at once to investigate
the crime. Ortizthe victim was evidently
expecting trouble because when killed a
new 45 calbre pistol was found on his per-
son with three loads on it. He had been
watching the young woman and DeOllos
very closely and the latter wanted to get
Ortiz out of his way. Sheriff Campbell
and the constable and Justice of the
Peace John Womock deserve credit (for
the prompt mannerin which they work-
ed up the case and captured the murder-
ers.
M hen searched on the person of DeOllos
was found a veil with stitches in it which
he had worn and with which he had con-
cealed his face when he committed the
murder.
New Officers Elected.
The regular monthly meeting of the
Ladies' Auxiliary to the Y. M. C. A. was
held yesterday afternoon in the Christian
association room and thefollowingofticers
were elected for the ensuing year: Presi-
dent Mrs. G B. Davis: first vice-presi-
dent. Mrs. E. B. Alling; second vice-
president Mrs. E. R. Norton: third vice-
president Mrs. Dr. F. I). Boyd; secretary
Miss Elizabeth Norton: treasurer. Mrs’
R C. Norton. Most of these officers have
served during the past year.
The Club Disbands.
The Mission Athletic Foot Ball club
held a meeting last night and disbanded
for the season. Manager Janies Draper
was tendered a vote of thanks by the
club before the adjournment. The next
thing on foot is a base ball team which
will probably be organized in a few days.
Nine of the best base ball players in tHe
southwest can be secured out of the Mis-
sion Athletic club.

HEARD AROUND TOWN.
That caucus is not working right. Mar-
tin O'Day was not confirmed.
A soft snap. $13800 for city printing and
advertising and still no bids asked tor.
T. J. Cunningham is a candidate for the
San Antonio postoffice.
San Antonio Lodge No. 11 I. O. O. F.
will meet tonight.
There are s4.lsin the street commission-
er's fund and we are paying $13800 a year
for printing and advertising and no bids
asked for.
The tire department is still safe in the
hands of Chief Peek.
The people will not approve the borrow-
ing of any more money on notes.
The police and lire departments should
be placed under the civil service rules j
ana not be utilized for election purposes.
You can l>uv a home on the installment
plan by calling on John T. Hambleton &
Co. and stop paying rent.
The man who cannot read small-pica
reprint should not be appointed on the I
police force.
The best citizen is the man who owns
his own home. Ask Jno. T. Hambleton
about it.
Our new city council should perfect the
Australian ballot and registration laws
by a perfect ordinance so as to prevent
all manner of fraud in our city elections.
The Ben Moke Millinery Company will
hold their big spring opening next Mon-
day. See “ad" in the Light Saturday
supplement.
Including the charges for water hy
drants (and pressure we don’t get) the
lire department of the city is costing the
city something like $75000 a year. Let
the pruning knife tackle some of those
old rusty hydrants.
The city don't want to buy any old
rusty worn out plants but the tax payers
would not object to building its own
water works and electric light plants
There should be two large central mar-
ket buildings constructed one on the east
side and one on Presidio square west
side. One murket master then could eas-
ily do all the inspecting and collecting of
market fees.
Marchant's Assertion.
Charlie Marchant the London prize
fighter who is to meet Sport Ernest in a
glove contest shortly has stated that he
will be ready after the light to meet any
man in the southwest at 122 pounds for
$lOOO to $2000 a side an the largest purse
that can be offered by any sporting club.
An Old Resident Dies.
Prof. Robert Storbeck one of the oldest
and highly esteemed citizens of San
Antonio passed into the other world at
7 o'clock this morning after an illness of
several days with something like pneu-
monia.
He was born in Prussia Germany June
16 1826. making him 60 years of age. He
landed in New York in 1856 and came to
this citv where he has since heen|resid-
ii g. He has been a teacher of music for
years and has been instrumental in ac-
complishing a great deal of good here.
Prof. Storbeck leaves two sons Robert
and Herman and two daughters Mrs.
Wm. Klaus and Mrs. S. Martinez to
mourn his loss.
The funeral will take place from his late
residence. No. 230 Blum street at 10
o'clock tomorrow morning. The St. Jo-
seph's society of which the professor was
a member will attend the funeral in a
body The remains will be laid to rest
in the city cemetery.
The many friends of the deceased will
be grieved to learn of sad death as he
beloved by all with whom he came in
contact.
An Eldorado.
To the San Antonio Light:
Rich and influential fathers who have
sons who were too lazy and stupid during
their school days to acquire a common
and useful education.and who neither in
learning a trade showed sufficient good
will to become useful members of society
will be glad to learn that the city of San
Antonio is only too willing to take these
scapegraces from their hands feed clothe
and pay them well by their appoint-
ments no matter if a poor worthv de-
serving citizen who by ill luck ’is de-
prived from gaining a living for his fami-
ly- Fokgotten Pkomise.

HER MAJESTY'S CORSET.
Ladies:
We beg to call your attention to the
five following reasons why you should buy
this corset in preference to all others
none of these five advantages have ever
been accomplished iu any other COR-
SET. We have thousands of voluntary
testimonials from ladies who have worn
HER MAJESTY’S CORSET.
Every Pair Warranted.
It is the best because
Ist. It is the only corset ever made
that will reduce the size and increase the
length of the waist of fleshy ladies with-
out injurious tight lacing.
2d. It is proof against perspiration
and moisture and will neither corrode
nor soil the underwear stretch at the
waist nor do the Irones move or come
out in wear.
3d. It it the best and only real abdo-
minal and spiual supporter in existence.
4th. It always retains its original
shape; never becoming the form of the
wearer. It is invaluable to young ladies
because it strengthens the spine; removes
and prevents stooping and round should-
ers. In this respect it will be found
beneficial to all ladies as it aids the
wearer to assume au erect and health-
ful position in walking or riding.
sth. This corset must not be more
than 2 inches smaller than the size of
your waist when measured tightly over
your dress. If so ordered no corset
maker can make one to order (at any-
price) that will fit as well or with as much
ease and comfort or give such a magnifi-
cent form.
We guarantee that HER MAJESTY’S
CORSET will wear longer give more
comfort to the wearer and produce a
more exquisite figure than any other
corset made.
