Manager San Antonio Light.
There is no city in the state
that is making the material pro-
gress today that this city is.
The building aggregate of this
city is greater than that of any
other city in Texas but she has no
boom.
The German army has cost that
country as much during the past
twenty years as the American war
of the rebellion cost this govern-
ment. It is no wonder that the
people demand a less burdensome
system.
Republicans who have been
Democrats sincewthe election are
not in good odor witli Carlisle.
No nor with anyone else.
The Fort Worth Gazette puts in
a plea for the restoration of Prin-
ters’ Ink to the privileges of second
class mail matter of which it was
deprived by Wannamaker. This re-
storation would bean act of justice.
If Adlai is swinging around the
circle with the hope of dropping
the vice from his name in 1596 and
retaining the rest of it he is swing-
ing like a ship with the tide to no
purpose.
The red rag journalist is not so
numerous as he was but there are
enough of the irritable breed for
seeding another generation or two.
The party organ that surrenders
its private opinion to the demands
of the party is of no earthly use
to the party. The journal that is
of use is the one with brains enough
to form an independent judgment
and with independence enough to
express it when formed without
any regard to the approval or dis-
approval of party leaders.
That air line railway to the
mouth of the Brazos is only wait-
ing for the right man to take hold
of it and put it through. It is
bound to be built before the centu-
ry closes.
It would be a splendid thing to
see this city properly sewered but
it is not.necessary to do that before
every possible effort is put forth
to make and keep her clean. She
is too much of a natural beauty to
have her fair face obscured with
dust and her garments soiled
MARKET HOUSE NO. 2.
The recent decision of the courts
in the matte*/ of fees for the inspec-
tion of butcher shops takes away
a considerable revenue from this
city. By the erection of a market
house this revenue would be re-
stored and a considerale addition
made to it for the rental of market
stalls would be no Inconsiderable
sum. Not only so but the salaries
of two or three inspectors would
be saved there being no need of
the number now employed when
the whole business is concentrated
in one place and under one super-
vision. Not only would there be
economy in this direction but the
wants of the people would be in
every way subserved by it. The
regulation of prices would be much
easier effected under such a condi-
tion of things as would bring
all that is to be offered into one
place for tTie inspection of
buyers and both the market
gardeners and the public would be
better satisfied. Hucksters would
be prevented from offering their
produce on the street until after a
certain hour in the day thus in-
suring the first offering of fruits
meats and vegetables in the mar-
ket stalls. This would assure the
citizens of a full market house
'rom which to make their selec-
tions and at the same time the
rivalry between the several stall
keepers would insure the best
jossible display and the most
lempting disposition of whatever
is offered for sale. Quality and
variety would thus be guaranteed
by natural conditions and out of
these would arise a better market
from season to season as only
those who most successfully met
the requirements ef the public
taste would secure custom or at
least the best custom. As to the
cost of building such a cen-
tral market it would not be
burdensome and in the end would
be a large source of revenue over
and above the interest on the cost
of construction. It would not be
necessary for the city to appropri-
ate more than one-half of the nec-
essary funds as the rest could be
readily raised by private subscrip-
tion. This is not matter of specu-
lation as some of the most sub-
stantial of our people have assured
the Light that they would con-
tribute liberally for such a pur-
pose believing it for the advantage
of the city every way considered
to have such a market established
in some central location. What-
ever is for the benefit of the city as
a municipality is also beneficial to
the citizens and it is solely be-
cause this market house would be
a public benefit that the Light
calls attention to the matter and
suggests that the project be takeh
under advisement.
With a good central market
erected in this city it should not be
difficult to put those Union Stock
Yards on a paying basis. Their
capacity is ample for the wants of
this* city for years to come and
they ought to be made a source of
profit to the stockmen of this south-
west.
San Antonio has more miles of
electric railway in operation than
any two cities in Texas and has
more now in contemplation or in
actual construction than any other
city. When her work in this di-
rection is finished she will have
about one hundred miles of splen-
didly equipped road.
The city markets are better sup-
plied with fruits and vegetables
this season than ever before.
Critically 111.
Harry Morehouse who has an Interest
in a planing mill near the I. & G. N.
railway is lying at bls home at West
End in a very critical condition his
trouble being congestion of the bowels*
Last night be grew worse and it was with
hard labor that five physicians kept him
alive. Today he is somewhat improved
but is still a very sick man.
Jack Elwood Back.
Col. Jack Elwood who lived in San An-
tonio some years ago and was one of the
original promoters of the San Antonio
and Aransas Pass Railway lately con-
nected with the Chicago and St. Paul ar-
rived in San Antonio yesterday and Is
being warmly received by his old friends
and Jack has a host of them. Mr. El-
wood will spend a short time in San An-
tonio enjoying the ozone. It is rumored
on good authority.that he will be given a
good job by Mr. B. F. Yoakum on the
Santa Fe railway.
