THINKLETS FOR THE THOUGHT-
FUL.
[BY ALI BEN HASSAN].
How much benefit and how
much consolation may I ask has
the world ever derived from a be-
lief in the “total depravity of man”
and the doctrine of “eternal pain?”
Can it be truthfully said that these
doctrines through their influence
on the human mind have had an
elevating effect upon the moral
state of man? Have they not had
the tendency of dwarfing rather
than expanding his intellectual
and moral faculties? In my opin-
ion no man can believe in these
doctrines without lowering there-
by his moral standard. They can-
not but leave upon his soul the stain
and stignia of heartlessness and
greed.
The “Vicarious Atonement” is
in its true significance a kind of
“dernier resort” adopted by the
church with a purpose of saving
men from the orthodox perdition
in the “nick of time” and not in-
frequently by the very “skin of
their teeth” as it were. Through
its means the murderer on the
scaffold rejoices in the hope that
he is leaving this “vale of tears”
for “a land that is fairer than day.”
As a last solace that can be given
a doomed man it serves a noble
purpose but the principle underly-
ing it is a pernicious one.
The skeptic i. e. the thinker has
come to stay. Never before in the
world’s history has skepticism
held so prominent a place in the I
realm of religious thought as it
does at the present day. Skepti-
cism has been we might figura-
tively say the “Messiah” of the
mind—the “Saviour” of the in-
tellect. Men are becoming more
and more broad minded and as a
consequence more liberty-loving.
The church appears now to be
more of a luxury than a necessity
to mospt eople.
We are in the midst of profound
changes and religion will neces-
sarily be affected by them as they
come to pass.
Christianity Jays too much
stress on creed and not enough on
character. The latter appears with
so called Christians to be a matter
of secondary importance and little
moment. Is it possible they do
not realize that by pursuing such
a course they are not breeding
germs of hypocrisy within the
sanctified premises of the church?
No man can sincerely believe ।
what he cannot put into prac- <
tice. Imagination may carry us
far away to castles of hope built in
the air but Truth will teach us
how to find contentment even in a
cottage. I would rather be con-
tent than be a king.

Johnny Robinson's Funeral.
The funeral of Johnnie Robinson the
four year old colored boy who was shot
through the brains by Mrs. Southall last
Saturday moruing about 8:30 o'clock
took place from the residence of his aunt
on Solado street yesterday afternoon at
5 o’clock and the body was interred in
the city cemetery. The funeral was an
Impressive one and was very pitiful.
Deputy Sheriff James McCloskey repair-
ed to the county jail about thirty min-
utes before the burial of young Robinson
and after placing the handcuffs on Geo.
Robinson the father of the boy who Is
charged with the murder of his wife ac-
companied him to the house in which the
corpse was lying. When Robinson arrived
and stood by the side of his child who
was cold in death he looked wild for a
moment then began weeping and it was
with the greatest difficulty that he was
persuaded to leave the remains For the
first time since Robinson’s wife died he
seemed to realize what had come to pass
and the scene was very touching. He
offered a fervent prayer before taking a
last look at his child and was then taken
back to the county jail and placed behind
the bars.
