MONDAY AUGUST 7 1893.
SANCTUM SCISSORINGS.
Arkansas Press: “Between the
gold bugs of Wall street and the
silver mine owners of the west the
country is in a bad row of stumps;
tout there is a financial policy be-
tween these two extremes that
should be adopted.”
Washington Post: “The contest
4n the courts of South Carolina over
the constitutionality of the Till-
man dispensary law has culminat-
ed at last in an issue between the
•circuit bench and the supreme
'bench and the outcome is involved
in doubt.”
Texas Farmer: “If Crisp has
to sacrifice silver to appease
■the insatiable greed of the gold-
»bugs he should be beaten for
.speaker. The Chicago platform
must be carried out and bi-metal-
ism be reestablished and traitors
to that platform need expect no
mercy from the people.”
Cincinnati Post: “A good illus-
'tration of the way the price of a
commodity is regulated by the de-
.mand and supply is found in the
fact that the Louisiana planters
have made no more money out of
their enormous rice crop of 2000-
<OOO than they have heretofore
made from their average crops of
1000000 bags.”
Galveston News: “Artful ad-
jectives and cloudy parenthetical
clauses will not avail the great
men of our country in the present
emergency. They will have to
make known to the people just
where they stand this year. The
ordinary double meaning of the
platform and artful dodging on the
rstump will not satisfy this time.”
New Orleans States: “The south
is deeply grateful for the assist-
ance which the senators from the
silver states gave her and which
enabled her to defeat the force
bill but at the same time the
south cannot pay the debt she
■owes to Colorado Nevada and two
or three other western states by
voting against the repeal of the
act which is bringing disaster upon
Ahe whole country.”
Floresville Chronicle: “The feud
between County Judge McDaniel
and Attorney Templeton at Waxa-
hachie has been settled. Temple-
ton was fined $2OO in the county
court and the judge would not al-
low him to practice in his court
until the fine was paid. Tempk-
<*ton sued out a writ of habeas cor-
pus before Judge Hurt but before
it came up for hearing friends in-
\crfered and peace was made.”
Houston Post: “There was much
-disappointment in the audience at
<the postponement of the Shaw
hanging for a week. Some had
been standing around the jail for
twelve and twenty-four hours and
were mad at the governor for post-
poning the performance. Shaw
himself had appealed for a short
wespite and in a matter of life and
«death seven days is not long to
wait. ‘Put yourself iahis place.’”
Corpus Caller: “It is rumored
that the Houston Post is going to
/purchase the Fort Worth Gazette
and that the two papers will be
run under the same management.
If the rumor turns out to be cor-
rect the two Newses will then
have strong opposition at both
•ends of the line. The snccess of
the Post since it has been under its
present business and editorial
management has not been short of
phenomenal and it has now
reached a point which places it in
.the front rank of Southern jour-
nalism.”
Cleburne Chronicle: “If this
country does not need a bankrupt
daw surely it never did. Bad in-
vestments speculations vicious
and infernal legislation by dema-
gogues and ignoramuses have
ruined thousands of men through-
out the country. Among the class
whose energies for the present are
paralyzed are the projectors of
public enterprises the construc-
tion of railroads factories the
building up of towns and cities
the class who when they made it
r circulate they should have a
• chanee to ‘wipe out’ and com-
mence life again”.

Where Is He?
On August 2 a well known sa-
loon keeper on Commerce street
left hjs business and was expected
back next morning. Since then
nothing has been heard from him
nor has anything been seen of him.
The saloon is run by his barkeeper
who professes to be ignorant of his
whereabouts or intentions. The
saloon keeper is an estimable man
and it is hoped that all is well but
this mysterious action has created
considerable anxiety.
