idea they will some-day regret their reck-
lessness and neglect. They laugh at Death
but in a short while a very short while the
laugh is on the other side. Death waits
while they laugh. He who laughs last
laughs best and in due time Death dances
on the prostrate body of the laugher. There
are many funny things in this world but
death is not one of them. Neither is ill-
health for it is one of Death’s weapons and
the most effective.

A BOYS’ ROAD-YACHT.
How Two Bright Younr.ter« Sall
Through Chicago’s Streets.
On one of the wide avenues of Chicago
there has lately been seen the queer
spectacle of a cart with a neat pair of
sails mainsail and jib spinning along
before the wind turning around cor-
ners or tacking to an adverse breeze.
The strange craft was not exactly a
cart apparently for its hind wheels
were regular bicycle wheels with
pneumatic tires and the front ones
■were taken from a boy’s cushion-tire
.bicycle while the body is far from be-
ing a common cart-body. It resembles
rather the deck of a boat.
This land-yacht's story is told by the
Chicago Record. The craft was invent-
red and built by two boys of that city
Lawrence and Harold Osborne by name.
Last'summer during their vacation
.they spent a good deal of time in a
sailboat. They enjoyed this sport
.greatly and as It was not practicable
for them to go sailing on the dangerous
.waters of Lake Michigan they resolved
•to have a "sailboat” thqt would go on
land. They procured the wheels'Tro®
disused bicycles — using these in
preference toany other wheels because
: it is necessary that the craft shall be
very light-running—and procured a
thin strong board fop a deck.
As the craft would be useless unless
it could be steered it was necessary to
invent a steering apparatus. This the
You some-

health in the

ey. There are

boys succeeded in doing very cleverly.
.They pierced their deck so as to put a
lever through it and to this lever made
of a broomstick they attached strong
pieces of light rope in such a way as to
move the front wheels either way.
Then the boys inserted their mast
which is seven feet high; they made
booms and bent on their sails whichere
neatly made of coarse sheeting. The
sails are correctly proportioned to the
size and weight of the “hull” and so
to proportion them and also to place
the mast in exactly the right spot so
that the sails should draw well was a
task which required much ingenuity
and instinctive understanding of the
principles of navigation.
A seat was placed at the rear for the
captain. The “crew”—which is one
brother or the other as the case hap-
pens to be—must take his chances flat
on the deck with the boom sweeping
over him nt ’noments convenient for it-
self but i • ■ enient for him. But no
inconven : < (natters so long as the
yacht goes.
And go it does if there is a good
smart breeze. It will not condescend
to navigate the avenue in a light wind.
It's movements are always observed
with immense interest on the street
At a distance up the street it has exact-
ly the appearance of a properly rigged
sloop coming down over the pavement
and greatly astonishes all who behold
it for the first time.
Age* at Which Marriages May Be Con-
In Austria a “man” and a “woman”
are supposed to be capable of conduct-
ing a home of their own from the age
of 14. In Germany the man must be at
least 18 years of age. In France the
man must be 18 and the woman 15; in
Belgium the same. In Spain the in-
tended husband must have passed his
fourteenth year and the woman her
twelfth. In Hungary for Roman
Catholics the man must be 14 years old
and the woman 12; for Protestants the
map must be 18 and the woman 15. Jin
Greece the man must have seen at least
14 summers and the woman 12. In
Portugal a boy of 14 is considered mar-
riageable and a woman of 12. In Rus-
sia and Saxony they are a little more
sensible and a youth must refrain from
entering into matrimony till he can
count 18 years and the woman till she
can count 12. In Switzerland the men
from the age of 14 and the women from
the age of 12 are allowed to marry. In
Turkey any youth and maiden who can
walk properly and can understand the
necessary religious service are allowed
to be united for life.
British jesters sometimes pay dearly
for their jokes. One who frightened
a married yoman into fits by telling her
that her husband had been severely in-
jured in a railroad accident has had to
pay $5OO for the fun.
