Cutting Their Corn.
County Attorney Bart De Witt
reports that the Mexican farmers
south and southwest of town are
going through their fields cutting
out the dry corn for fodder and
leaving the green stalks stand. A
number of farms in the eastern
portion of the county whose lands
did not catch the recent rains
have cut down their entire corn
for fodder and are depending en-
tirely on cotton for a crop.
A Dog Hobo.

Broke His Leg.
J. L. Trueson a farmer living on
the Rosillo creek nine miles east
of town broke his leg yesterday
afternoon while coming to the city.
He was sitting on a box in the
front of his wagon which was
laden with melons when a jolt
threw him off. The front wheel
passed over his leg breaking it be-
tween the knee and ankle. He
was taken to a drug store near East
End where his injured limb re-
ceived medical attention.
Stolen Street Car Passes.
Superintendent B. W. Randall
of the Rapid Transit line is com-
plaining of some one stealing
pass books issued by the company
and fraudulently selling them. He
has already detected a number of
them and is looking for more.
Last Tuesday night a man
boarded one of the ears and pre-
sented a pass Mr. Randall who
was on the car asked the man how
the pass came into his possession.
He could not give a satisfactory
explanation and the pass was can-
celled. More developments are ex-
pected.
London Women Writers.
Two and a half years ago the
women journalists of London
formed a club of their own on a
modest scale. The venture pros-
pered and last week the seal of
success was set upon the Women
Writers’ club as it is called by
Princess Christian one of the
Queen’s daughters who opened the
new club premises off the Strand.
Various speeches were made by
women’ and mush tea and thin
bread and butter and cake were
consumed. Some favored men
who were present among the
number Thos. Hardy novelist;
George Alexander actor and Hen-
ry Arthur Jones playwright de-
clare that the Women Writers’
club art* a sensible businesslike
lot of young and middle-aged wo-
men who mostly have to earn
their own living. But there is a
fashionable leaven in the mass.
One duchess for instance is a
member and seueral other ladies
of title joined the ranks some
time ago while Princess Christian
is president.

A City of Men Only.
From the Chicago Tribune.
In Mongolia close to the borders
of Russian Siberia is Maiwaichin
and is the only city in the world
peopled by men only. The Chinese
women are not only forbidden to
live in this territory but even to
pass the great wall of Kalkan and
enter into Mongolia. All the
Chinese of this border city are ex-
clusively traders and they accum-
ulate money till their trading with
Europe through Siberia has created
sufficient fortune to enable them
to return to their native cities and
to live theTo in ease with their
families.
Emmet and Dick Heard From.
News from Scranton Pa. state
that Emmet Rogers and Dick
Phelan two well-known San An-
tonio ball players who are now
with the Scranton team “are right
in line with the rest of ’em.” Em*
met and “Dad” are rooming to-
gether and are representing San
Antonio in an able manner.
They never allow an oppor-
tunity to pass without putting in
good words for the Alamo City.
It is at present quite cold at Scran-
ton in fact so much so that the
players cannot work up perspira-
tion when playing ball. Emmet
and “Dad”write that they’ll make s
bee line for “good old Santone” as
soon as the season closes to spend
the fall and winter here. “Dad” is
playing second base out of sight
and Rogers is catching in a storm.
