The San Antonio Mutual Aid and
Benevolent oSciety held a meeting last
night in Piper’s hall on Wyoming
street President W. T. Schumacher in
the chair. Three new members were
admitted and the committee appoint-
ed to arrange for the first grand ball
to be given in Arbeiter Verein hall on
December 18th reported that all ar-
rangements had been completed and
that a large number of tickets had al-
ready been sold.
Mr. Dan C. Bitter was selected to
lead the grand march.

terday for Sherman Texas to dis-
pose of some property.

Troop B Fifth Cavalry On A 15
Days’ Gating.
Officers And Ladies Guests Of The
Opera House Last Night -Gos-
sip Of The Post.
Fort Mclntosh Tex. Dec. 7.—(Spe-
cial)—Troop B Fifth cavalry com-
manded by Capt. C. H. Watts and First
Lieut. J. J. Hornbrook left this post on
a fifteen days’ practice march over the
surrounding country. Company A
Eighteenth infantry under command
of Capt. Goodale and Lieut. Goodale
returned from a practice march last
Thursday.
AT THE OPERA HOUSE.
Tin* soldiers comprised the largest
part of the audience last night. They
all wanted to see Sergeant Quigley ami
squad fire at Mme. Herrmann. All
the officers and their ladies in the post
were extended an invitation by the
opera house management last night to
witness Herrmann's performance free
and a large number responded to the
invitation. Among those noticed in
the boxes were the two department
paymasters. Majors Bullis and Dodge
accompanied by their wives; Major
Keller commander of the nifantry bat-
talion; Capt. Thomas commander of
the cavalry squadron; Capt. Dravo
chief commissary of the department
and family; Capt. Foster canteen offi-
cer accompanied by his wife; Lieut.
Jenkins adjutant and wife; Lieut.
Johnny Wade and wife and a number
of others. At the close of the per-
formance the magician was the guest
of the officers at their club.
GOSSIP OF THE GARRISON.
Private William Strobackers re-en-
listed yesterday for troop F.
Capt. Potter was officer of the day
yesterday and Lieut. Bolles was officer
of the guard.
Private Powers of company C was
discharged Sunday and left last eve-
ning for his home in New York.
The band will play a concert from
the band stand on the upper parade
ground this afternoon at 4 o'clock.
A petition is being circulated about
the garrison soliciting contributions for
the Christmas entertainment of the
Post Sunday school.
Infantry dress parade took place
last evening at 5:30 o'clock and caval-
ry dress parade this morning at 10:30.
Sergeant Frederick Kleber of troop
K re-enlisted yesterday.
The Government Hill Golf club has
been organized by officers of the post.
Lieut. Sam Reber chief signal officer
of the department the all-around au-
thority on athletics was the main fac-
tor in perfecting the club. He is the
secretary.
Lieut. Pegram E. Whitworth and
party left this morning on their trip
over the surrounding country to secure
data for a new map shortly to be
draughted by Lieut. Whitworth. He
was accompanied by Lieut. Brooks.
Sergeant Flaherty and four privates.
OLD JACK BRENNAN.
A letter has been received addresed
to the sporting editor of the Light from
Jack Brennan the well known umpire
of hist season's Texas league. Bren-
nan writes that he is an applicant for
appointment on the National league
staff of umpires. His many San An-
tonio friends hope that he will receive
tin appointment for they know that
his work as seen here cannot be sur-
paased and it Is safe to say that he has
but few equals as a baseball umpire.

PERMFORMER INJURED.
Last night about 11 o’clock while
Kin ’Sner the strong man. was per-
forming on the stage at the Standard
theatre a stack of chairs on which he
was standing alxiut 14 feet in height
fell and precipitated him to the stage
severely cutting one leg and an arm
and a physician was called in to sew
up the wounds.
THE COMRADE'S HOP.
The hop given by the Comrade Social
club at Burke’s hall on Austin street
Saturday night was attended by sixty-
four couples. The grand march was
led by Mr. A. C. Jonas and Miss Es-
ther Leonard a popular young lady of
Luling.
