The Popular Dance.
Brooklyn Eagle.
At watering places there are the
german and two-step waltz. It is
the duty of the master of cere-
monies at the big hotels to conduct
the hops and make things pleas-
ant for the guests. New and
eccencric dances are not as common
as some writers would make peo-
ple believe. During the winter
some particular dance may become
the rage; if so this is generally
the one inv ogue through the sum-
mer. Everybody that dances has
gone wild over the two-step waltz
the result being that it is the
fashion with the swell set at New-
port Bar Harbor Lenox and Sara-
toga. It is considered by many
the most graceful of the
round dances. Few square dances
are found on the programmes
unless it bean occasional landers.
The german or the cotillion
as the French call it is generally
the winding up of every festivity.
Each society set has its german
leader and each vies with the
other to invent taking figures but
it is no longer in good form to in-
troduce romping and gymnastic
figures but rather easy graceful
ones. The favors vary according
to the taste and purse of the hos-
tess. The skirt dance still has its
advocates many claiming that it
is more beneficial than some of the
so-called physical culture exercises
and for this reason probably has
been introduced into the gymnas-
ium where girls properly taught
are said to gain strength grace-
fulness and ease. The society girl
is fond of its whirl and swirl and
certain matrons and grandmothers
even work hard to acquire its in-
tricacies in hopes of reducing the
double chin and stooping shoulder.

Winter Preparation.
Attention should now be directed
toward plants that are to supply
bloom and foliage next fall winter
and spring therefore sow pansy
seed at the present time for next
spring’s blooming. If any sown
before this time has germinated
and the plantlets are quite large
they may be grown in and brought
indoors in the fall for immediate
blooming relying on the sowing
of this and next month for the
main batch of spring plants. If
they are large now they do not
winter over as well as may be ex-
pected ; smaller-sized plants do
much better. French and Scotch
hybridists have brought this plant
to such a high standard that the
returns of the imported seed has
been so encouraging in the produc-
tion of first-grade flowers in size
quality color and habit that the
comparatively insignificant blooms
produced by cheap mixed seed are
seldom visible in gardenr of flor-
icultural-appredating people.
The plantlets reared from the
Cyclamen seed advised to be sown
last spring should now be large
enough to shift to 4-inch pots
using a mixture of good fibrous
loam and leal mold with the ad-
dition of enough.

Tummer Gossip
Dachshunds are the popular pets
with ladies at Elberon. One lady
has two of these queer long-bodied
and bow-legged creatures that are
said to be worth $5OO each.
Ata New Hampshire hotel an
entertainment was given called a
jingle party. An equal number of
ladies and gentlemen were given
slips of paper on which each wrote
his or her name. The slips were
then putin a hat shaken and each
player drew one. < >n the slip drawn
a short verse of poetry was then
to be written which must rhyme
with the name on the slip. When
the slips were read there was much
laughter.
Every now and then they have
a baby show on the pier at Atlantic
City and when they do one of the
incidents is electioneering for the
twins. Everybody who goes in votes
and there are prizes for the pret-
tiest fattest and cutest baby in the
show and for the best pair cf twins
seem to excite the greatest compe-
tition and not only’ the fathers
and mothers but friends and rela-
tives and ever so many’ admirers
of each brace of ‘beauties solicit
the visitor for a vote often even
before he gets within the gateway.
The Salvation Army and other
incidental diversions so divide up
the Ocean Grove crowds that Rev.
Dr. Strokes has provided a new
attraction for the Auditorium
meetings. The pretty girl bugler
is likely to become a figure as im-
portant as the hallelujah lassie
who jingles the tambourine. At
the very front of the platform
stands a good-looking girl often
with arms bare.

Photographing the Unseen.
A curious application of electric-
ity is foreshadowed in an English
optical journal. It shows that the
prevalent idea that iselectric waves
were applied in photography or
some process equivalent thereto no
practically’ useful purpose would be
achieved is a mistake. It instances
the case of ships at sea. Marine
signaling is useful; but there is a
far more important object that
might be effected without very’
greatly’ taxing the resources of op-
ticians in the application of elec-
tric waves. It is most desirable
for the navigator to be able in
some way to distingush large ob-
jects such as neighboring ships or
rocks at some little distance even
when these objects are hidden
from the unaided eye by a dense
fog and electric waves can now
be generated by which the
very densest of fogs are easily
penetrated. One objection to elec-
tric photographs is that the will
be wanting in definition; but for
useful as distinguished from ar-
tistic purposes exact definition is
of less consequence than may be
ordinarily supposed. In estimat-
ing the possibilities of electric pho-
tography it is demonstrated that
detective snap-shottists using the
i electrical method would rejoice in
the curious trasparency of dry
brick walls and mineralogists
might to some extent explore the
interior of file earth. With such a
system too better success than has
attended preliminary experiments
with a downwardly projected beam
of light might be looked for in
photographing the sea bottom in
shallows where it is most essential
for the navigator to have sound-!
iugs such as might be obtained on
the telescopic principle constantly
“under the eye.”
