ARMY NEWS.
Reported Specially Fob The Lioht.
Lieutenant General Schofield af-
ter visiting Fort Omaha left for
Forts Robinson and Niobrara.
Captain Moore has been assigned
to the command of B Twentieth
infantry in place of Major McCas-
key who has commanded the com-
pany since 1871.
In 1887 Lieutenant Ripley now
of the Third cavalry transferred
with Lieutenant A. C. Ducat now
of the Twenty-fourth infantry.
The former will be promoted to a
captaincy in a few weeks while
the latter will not receive his pro-
motion for the next four years.
The horses of troop A Fifth cav-
alry are having a ten days’ vaca-
tion on the target range.
Lieutenant G. Bakus of the
First cavalry is seriously ill at a
hospital in Dallas. He has been on
sick leave for some time.
General Coppinger and staff
visited Fort Niobrara last week
during a heavy snow storm.
A non-commissioned officer of
the garrison has been ordered be-
fore a board in the]l7th Inst to be
examined for promotion to com-
missary sergeant.
There will be fifty-two graduates
from the Military academy this
week with but thirty-two vacancies
existing in the aripy at present
Sixth cavalry three; Seventh cav-
alry’ one and Ninth one. The
artillery has three vacancies and
the infantry twenty-four.
Captain Oscar Elting Third
cavalry and Lieutenant G. L. Con-
verse same regiment will retire
from active service on August Bth.
A Chicago paper says: “The
annual shifting of the regular
troops will take place within the
next month. The plan has been
agreed upon and with a few minor
changes is ready for promulgation.
It is said there is likely to ne a
lively shifting of troops at tort
.Sheridan and that the Fifteenth in-
fantry may expect some western
duties.
In a recent article in a magazine
the writer thinks that this chang-
ing of station ought to be stopped
as It does no good and the money is
Heeded elsewhere; he says If a
change must take place to change
only the officers and sergeants and
leave the privates behind. What a
brain this fellow must have to
evolve a scheme like the above.
Post Chaplain Batemans de-
livered an address at Fort Assina-
boine on the subject “Is War Ever
Justifiable?” and came to the con-
clusion that it was and for three
reasons:
First—When a government has
become so corrupt that its further
continuance means bondage to the
common people as in 1776.
Second—When insults to a free
people can no longer be borne as
In 1812.
Third—When a good government
is to be preserved from disruption
and freedom is to be vouchsafed to
the people as in 1861.
Mr. J. B. Gilbert formerly one of
our most popular young business
men and one of the projectors of
the present successful San Antonio
Gun club is in the city today from
Houston. He is now deputy sheriff
of Harris county and is up with an
insane patient for the Southwest-
ern asylum.
Miss Olga Reimann chief book-
keeper for the Lauda mills in New
Braunfels is in the city for a two
month’s visit to her mother.
NEWS OF THE COURTS
Toby Wright on Trial for Rape
Other News.
Toby Wright is being tried in tho
Thirty-seventh District court to-
day charged with raping Ellen
Morrison. Both are colored. The
evidence which is being adduced is
productive of considerable out-
burst of laughter from the specta-
tors and Judge Green has found it
necessary to announce that if it is
not stopped those who cannot re-
frain from laughing will have to
be ejected from the court room.
FORTY-FIFTH DISTRICT COURT.

company damages; motion for
new trial overruled and defendant
gave notice of appeal.

The county commissioners this
morning approved the report of
Sheriff Campbell for feeding
prisoners during the month of
May. The report shows there were
105 prisoners in the jail that
month and that 1734 meals were
served costing $520.20.
A. W. Perrin declined to serve
as overseer of the Beitel road and
George Fisher was ordered selected
in his place.
The county surveyor was ordered
to survey the line of the Huebner
road.
CIRCUIT COURT.
Coroner Jones was summoned to
No. 608 North Concho street this
morning to hold an inquest over
a still-born child of Mrs. Anna
Allen.
A verdict of suicide was rendered
by Coroner Jones in the inquest of
Henry Schmeltor. A similar ver-
diet will be rendered in the Thom-
as James inquest.
The grand jury this morning in-
dicted Charley Clifford for grand
larceny and Manuel Cedron for as-
sault to murder a Mexican woman
with a knife.
Bertha Sampson colored was
examined before United States
Commissioner Price this morning
on a charge of passing a counter-
feit dollar and was released as
there was not sufficient evidence to
hold her. .
Deputy United States Marshal
Ed. Ware arrested Alexandro Val-
divia yesterday charged with vio-
lating the internal revenue laws.
He sold cigars without having
them in a box as required by law.
The grand jury visited the coun-
ty jail this forenoon.
NINETY-NINE YEARS.
Gus Lawrence was tried for rap-
ing Bettie Mitchell in the Thirty-
seventh District court yesterday
and was given 99 years in the
penitentiary. Both are colored.
assaulted her with a knife.
Marcela Campa de Guzman be-
gun divorce proceedings against
her husband Frneando Guzman
in the Thirty-seventh District
court this morning. Plantiff ac-
cuses defendant of assaulting her
with a knife last June and of
seriously threatening to kill her.
They were married in this county
December 121892.
ADJOURNED OUT OF RESPECT.
The Court of Civil Appeals met
at 9 o’clock this morning but ow-
ing to the absence of Judge James
on account of the funeral of his
brother court immediately ad-
ourned until tomorrow afternoon
it 3 o’clock when opinions will be
handed down and submission of
cases will be taken. This will be
the last submission of cases of this
term which closes June 29.
