Young- men, of all things good,
there is none so good as an ed-
ucation. I am among you as
your best friend. When I ask
you to do a thing, you may rest
assured that I have considered
the matter well and have come to
the conclusion that it is best for
you. If you disagree with me,
only remember that I mean no
offense.
Had I my way, there would be
introduced into the school life
elements of life that would make
your school days so pleasant that
you would ever seek the shadow
of some educational institution.
No one will ever be pleased with
school life until the great law of
the universe is implanted in his
breast.
Ten thousand years of ignor-
ance is not worth ten years of in-
telligence. Yet unless you learn
obedience with this knowledge,
unless you learn a respect for the
authority of the law. I hope that
you may never become educated.
I prefer an ignorant mean man
to an intelligent one. Intelli-
gence in the hands of evil is the
most terrible thing in the world.
I know this, therefore, whenever
you see me, whenever you meet
me whatever you find me doing,
there is this wish with me: Oh,
that boys might see before it is
everlastingly too late that there
is but one true life and that is the
life of pure thought and virtues
action.
We need more young men. We
need more young women. We
want them to climb upon the sun-
lit hills of perfect living. There
if but one way to do this: educate
yourself.
Of course, we all put the
Christian religion at the top, but
this Christian religion is
shorn of its greatest power when
we take from it intelligent minds.
Listen! I am a poor man. Yet,
I would not give what little edu-
cation I have for the entire wealth
of Texas, if there would be re-
quired of me to live the ignorant
lives some of you are choosing.
Give me education or give me the
jungles of Africa for my home. I
want absolute ignorance or the
opportunity of thinking thoughts
that are above the low sordid
things of life.
If you come to our school we
do not promise to attempt to
; make you better money makers.
Some of you are too good at that
already. I will attempt to point
you to the source of all great
thought and there let you wor-
ship. The only way to make
study pleasant is to make it
your greatest ambition in life, j
You must love knowledge for j
knowledge's sake.
I have no word of criticism for
| you if you do not come. I only
j know that when a young person
| chooses ignorance in preference
| to intelligence, it is because he
has never seen the beauty of a
well-ordered life.
It is never too late to begin. If
you are really anxious to know
more, come to see how we are
doing things in the Aspermont
School. We believe you will be
pleased if you are in earnest.
Best in Existence
"I sincerely believe, all things
considered. Hunt's Lightning
Oil is the most useful and valu-
able household remedy in exist-
ence. For cuts, burns, sprains
and insect bites it has no equal so
far as my experience goes."
G. E. Huntington,
Eufala, Ala.
Pounded Preacher
On last Thursday night the
many friends of Rev. A. T. Ford
and family took them completely
by surprise and gave them one
of the biggest poundings they
ever received at the hands of the
public. It would be impossible
to enumerate all the good things
they received but among them
was flour, sugar, coffee, pickles
and canned goods of every de-
scription. Rev. Ford and family
are held in high esteem bj- our
people and none more worthy of
the blessings thus received could
be found in any community.
When the guests preparing to
take their departure. Rev. Ford
bade them give him their atten-
tion for a few moments, and in
his usual impressive and heart-
felt manner graciously thanked
the donors for their generosity
and asked the blessings of an
Almighty God to rest on each and
every one present.
Long may the family live and
may they enjoy many like oc-
casions is the wish of the Star.

A telegram from Cincinnati to
the Abilene Reporter says:
"Edwin C. Lowden,bookkeeper
in the Provident Bank of Cincin-
nati is missing today and the
bank officials charge that he took
S5,000 in currency. Pinkerton
detectives and police were placed
on his trail immediately, but
have not yet apprehended him.
Lowden was highly respected
and trusted employee of the
bank and had free access to the
cashier's cage. From this cage
it is alleged that he extracted a
package of paper money amount-
ing to §5,000.''
Commenting on the above the
Abilene Reporter says Edwin
Lowden. familiarly known as
Ed. was the son of J. G. Lowden,
President of the American Nat-
ional Bank, of Abilene which
closed its doors something over
two y ears ago.
