MARRIED IN JAIL
Guy Waters and Monica Recendez
United—Court News.
County Judge Callaghan this
morning married a couple In the
county jail. The contracting par-
ties were Guy Waters and Monica
Recendez. The reason for choosing
such a strange place for the occa-
sion was that Waters was in jail
charged with seduction. The bride
is a pretty Mexican girl.
THREATENED HIS WIFE.
Alice' Heskins filed suit for di-
vorce against Steve Heskins In the
Forty-fifth District court this
morning. They were married in
September 1886 and lived together
as husband and wife until July 10
1895 when plaintiff alleges she
was forced to leave her husband on
account of brutal outrageous and
cruel treatment. She claims that
he threatened to kill her and that
on last June 15 he assaulted her
with a pistol. They have a home-
stead on Centre street and she
asks that it be set aside for her use
and benefit.

ASSAULT TO MURDER.
J. B. Griffin was arraigned before
Justice Devine this morning on a
charge of assault to murder and
his bond fixed at $5OO pending a
preliminary hearing next Tuesday
afternoon. Griffin is a colored man
and drives an express wagon. He
struck Len Huff also colored who
drives a family carriage over the
head with an axe handle on Ala-
mo plaza last night while the lat-
ter was trying to collect a dollar
from Griffin for a blanket which
Griffin lost while moving some
goods for Huff. A big gash was
cut in Huff’s head which was
sewed up. Griffin also made a
lunge at Huff with a knife and cut
his coat. Both were arrested for
fighting but the case against Huff
was dismissed.

Louis Gabel a farmer of the
Salado is to have a preliminary
hearing before Commissioner Price
next Thursday on a charge of buy-
ing grain belonging to the govern-
ment.
In an assignment filed in the
case of Emma S. Stetnle against
the Germania Life Insurance com-
pany suit on insurance policy
$lOOO of the amount claimed is
transferred to M rs. Goepf.
Sheriff Campbell has received in-
formation that a bay horse has
been stolen from Jim Harrison of
East Waco Texas and that $5O re-
ward is offered for its recovery.
Ina case of Max Mille against
Campbell Bros. suit for damages
in the sum of $30.50 tried in Jus-
tice Devines court Thursday judg-
ment was rendered for defendant.

terday dove shooting and returned

J. Brooks returned yesterday from
a trip to Beeville.

last Thursday night.

Old German Merchant Shot.
New York Sept. 7.—A special
to the Herald from Panama says:
A report has just been received in
this city from Cali in the depart-
ment of Cauca of the violent death
of a German merchant well known
in all parts of Colombia C. A.
Simonds. He was shot and instant-
ly killed by a Virginian Col. Rad-
ford. No details have been re-
ceived. Mr. Simonds was 70 years
old. He had been established in
Colombia more than 50 years.
