WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 9 ’95
ROUND ABOUT TALKS.
To the Daily Light:
As I have been diverting myself
as well as treating my body to a
bit of wholesome exercise by mak-
ing a tour of inspection of our city
I propose jotting down my obser-
vations for the edification of our
city rulers who cannot be expect-
ed to notice common things unless
specially set before them
Street crossings are needed con-
spicuously on every street in the
city. After that last small shower
one had to wade through slush and
mud at every street rmsHfr" and
was lucky if he got across without
losing one of hie shoes in the mud
which “sticketh closer than a broth-
er” or an adhesive plaster as to
that matter. The council should
devote a small portion of its valu-
able time to practical as well as
small improvements and to save
that august bodj’ of self-sacrificing
patriots much trouble I will sug-
gest with the utmost humility
that it cause street crossings to be
laid down across all the streets.
Cressings made of thick stout
plank or gravel would be a great
help to pedestrians particularly to
women. It would add to the com-
fort of our citizens even though it
should diminish the revenue of the
brigade of shoe blacks.
The streets in many places are
really rendered impassable for
days after a shower of rain In con-
sequence of the oversight or ignor-
ance of the city engineers in omit-
ting to provide an outlet for thp
fain
The rain fall on Houston from
Navarro street to the bridge
runs down St. Mary’s and
ruins that low street. Alamo
street has no proper outle
for rainwater and is hardly to be
crossed for several days after a
rain. Nueva street rain water
forms a pond at its intersection of
Garden [street and when the earth
has soaked up this ponded water
there is a mud hole six feet wide.
The water from Neuva and a good
deal from Presa when it strikes
Garden runs down that street to
Neuva where it ponds.
There is not a street in the city
that properly drains the rain water
nor is there a street which has any-
thing worthy of the name of a gut-
ter to carry off rain water. In every
street there are low places where
the water stands in ponds simply
because it has no outlet.
If the city engineer would don
his water proof coat and inspect
streets immediately after a rain he
would have an object lesson con-
cerning where rain water has to be
carried off.
As the cholera is raging in Asia
and Morocco it certainly behooves
us to keep San Antonio in a cleanly
condition and this cannot be done
so long as the rain water for want
of an outlet is left to form ponds
on every street and to overflow
half of them. Nothing is a better
hot bed for the germs of disease
especially of cholera than nonds
of stagnant water and overflowed
lands exposed to the rays of the
sun in our latitude.
Streets which are without any
outlet for storm water reflects no
credit on the city engineers
who established the grade of the
streets and omitted to make pro-
vision for draining off the storm
water. The storm water could be
emptied into the Alazan and San
Pedro creeks and into the San An-
tonio river and large conduits
could be provided with smaller
ones emptying into them on streets
remote from all of the above
named natural outlets.
Round About.
P. S. Had the rain on Sunday
night fallen in the day time the
street would have been so flooded
that pedestrians could not have
passed them. What a commentary
on our city engineer’s work ! R.

The Editor Meant Well.
A western Alabama editor was
writing up a local theatrical enter-
tainment recently and he wanted
to be particulararly nice about it
so he mentioned tho names of
several young ladies of the town
and wrote “they all filled their
parts to perfection.” Then he
went home. When the paper ap-
peared it was found that the
printer had put an “n” in the place
of an “r” in the word “parts.”—

A Puff for Silver.
In a recent editorial the Mexi-
can Herald say’s that Mexico with
her big round silver dollar face-
tiously called by the American
press a fifty-cent dollar is paying
her debt intrest and all her ad-
ministrative expenses without re-
sorting to any bond syndicates.
Her factories are running day and
night her railways are carrying
big freights her banks are paying
large dividends and foreign capi-
tal is coming in to share in the
general prosperity. The silver
dollar plus good sense in the
management of the government
does all the work.—Monterey

THE DISCOVERY SAVED HIS LIFE
Mr. G. Caillouette Druggist
Beaversville 111. says: “To Dr.
King’s New Discovery I owe my
life. Was taken with La Grippe
and tried all the physicians for
miles about but of no avail and
was given up and told I could not
live. Having Dr. King ; s New Dis-
covery in my store I sent for a bot-
tle and began its use and from the
first dose began to get better and
after using three bottles was up
and about again. It is worth its
weight in gold. We won’t keep
store or house without it.” Get a
