SATURDAY DECEMBER 7 ’95
Everything as yet is at sea be-
tween the governments of the
United States and Great Britain
over that Venezuelan boundary
question. Not until the text of
the communication from Salisbury
to Olney is read will there be any
reliable data upon which to bas e
eveif a speculation. There is this
comfort in the deal. Olney pre-
sent secretary of state is a man of
back bone and opinions and he is
firmly intrenched behind the
country’in his demand for the en-
lorcement of the unwritten law of
Monroe. That there will be any
war arising from clashing of
opinion here is not probable.
England has enough on her
hands at present without willfully
and maliciously thrusting herself
into a quarrel that antagonizes
the United! States'] and all the
Latin American states and which
is really of comparitively little
importance to herself. John is
stubborn but he is not a fool.
Economy in great things is the
type and sign of a small mind
just as truly as economy in little
things is the sure sign and type of
a provident one. It is the little
savings that underlie the accumu-
lation of fortunes.
The American Economist is smil-
ing its usual yard wffle smile at the
turn which things have taken in
the national congress. His turn
will come again and protection
will be on top so high that it will
require a telescope for freetrade to
discover the whereabouts of its
enemy.
Dan Stuart thinks that if he can-
not get mince pie hot that he will
eat it cold. His signing Maher
and Fitz for a fight the winner to
take $lOOOO Is of a piece'wlth this
determination. What will the sec-
retary of the interior of Mexico say
to the governor who permits the
fight within his territory? He has
already censured another of the
governors for permitting a prize
fight.
Russia thinks that It Is a poor
rule that does not work her way as
well as another and she takes
steps for organizing and maintain-
ing a branch of the Greek church
in this country upon a gorgeous
ecale. As it Is an imperial project
and backed up by the Russian
treasury there will be no limit to
expenses. The orders are to make
it the equal of any other church in
the countryjn so far as cathedral
building and equipments are con-
cerned but it must be pure Greek.
John’s Bull’s boys have too many
solid dollars invested in this coun-
try to stand by and see the gov-
ernment rush unnecessarily into a
war with the peoples of this west-
ern continent and that upon a
question which will naturally and
necessarily consolidate the repub-
lics of all grades in determined op-
position to the British assump-
tions. The odds against her are
too great for foolishness.
Reed has taken off his coat and
is hard at work making up his
committees. He should have the
work done in short meter as he
has known for months that he had
it do and the lists of members
from which to make his selections
have been in his hands for nearly
a year. Congress wants to get
down to business immediately af-
ter the holidays and the commit*
tees should know themselves a fort-
night before the Christmas ad-
journment. Reed will make no
mistakes if he can help it.
Fifteen-cents-a-bushel potatoes
ten-cents-a-pound wool and flfty-
cents-a-busbel wheat have bad a
hand in this recent turn over of the
freetrade democracy. It is the
wisdom of the present to be in-
structed by the failures of the past.
Let congress be wise and avoid the
old reefs.
Everything else belngjequal that
man or woman or firm or syndi-
cate or corporation is most to be
commended which the most patro-
nizes home Industries and home
made goods. Imported articles of
luxury should be put so high In
the tariff schedule as to compel
those who hanker after the foreign
fabrics to pay a good round price
for their unamerican preferences.
There is a liberty from the ex-
actions of British importunity that
It is not necessary to wait for un-
til the Monroe doctrine is enforced
by the arbitrament of diplomacy
or arms as shall be required in the
end to settle that vexed question.
That is freedom from British com-
petition through the judicious im-
position of duties on British made
goods. Shut but the foreigner.
The gales that sweep the British
channel and are felt upon the
shores of the Mediterranean are
possible precursors of the storms
that will soon rage around the
eastern extremity of that historic
water which has so often witnessed
the combats of the navies of an-
cient and modern times.
There is no one knows what the
porte will concludeto do and there
Is no one of all the powers interest-
ed in the outcome of matters at
the Bosporus that knows less about
the outcome than the sultan him-
silf. He is the most puzzled {and
the worst scared]man in Europe.
Never since the pigs had such a
time of it between the devil and
the deep sea as recorded
writ has there been such a devil
and deep sea business Jae that
which uncovers itself in Turkey. If
those Turkish swine escape a
drowning It wllUbe more by good
luck than by good generalship.
Election contests in the house of
representatives should be so man-
aged as to throw the burden of the
contests on those who initiate
them. The member with a certifi-
cate of election should be consid-
ered entitled to his place on the
face of the returns and the other
fellow obliged to give bonds to
cover the expenses of the contest.
Already the printed matter accu-
m ilatlng over contests in the house
reaches 17000 pages and the begin-
ning Is hardly made. There Is all
of the work before the committee
to come yet. It is time that this
expense was taken off the people.
The roosters in the late poultry
show had reason for crowing it
was the best show of the kind ever
put into coops in the great state of
Texas. It will be welcome another
season.
Europe has made merchandize
and a convenience of this conti-
nent long enough. It Is high time
to turn the tables and let those
effete monarchies take care of
tbemselvrs.

Minister Terrell has been push-
ing things into a corner in Turkey
and announces that the mission-
aries of both sexes in that land of
torment and assassination are all
safe.
The government of this country
has no need of mixing in a Euro-
| pean war. Under the circum-
stances it is in order and it Is also
the only wisdom to withdraw the
missionaries from the Turkish
field.

mitted suicide yesterday at bis

—Geo. W. Jenkins editor of the
Santa Maria “Times” Cal. in
speaking of the various ailments
of children said: “When my chil-
dren have croup there is only one
patent medicine that I ever use
and that is Chamberlain’s Cough
Remedy. It possesses some medi-
cal properties that relieve the little
sufferers immediately. It Is In
mo opinion the best cough medi-

The Negro Asku Protection.
Atlanta Ga. Dec. 6.—The negro
accused of attempting to assault
Miss Hammock of Rome Ga.
turned up in Atlanta. He went to
Governor Atkinson in person and
asked for protection. The negro
whose name is Williams and not
Harris said that his remarks to
the young woman were misunder-
stood and he denied having intend-
edjto commit an assault on her.
The Governor promised Williams
protection. The negro would prob-
ably have been lynched had he
been caught by the mob which was
pursuing him.
—A. E. Kilpatrick of Fillmore
Cal. had the misfortune to have
his leg caught between a cart and
a stone and badly bruised. Ordi-
narily he would have been laid up
for two or three weeks but says:
“After using one bottle of Cham-
berlain’s Pain Balm I began to feel
better and in three days was en-
tirely well. The peculiar soothing
qualities which Chamberlain’s
Pain Balm possesses I have never
noticed in any other liniment. I
take pleasure in recommending it.”
This liniment is also of great value
for rheumatism and lame back.
