THURSDAY DECEMBER 15 1898.
Every woman should realize that her
health is like a bank account. At the out-
set she Iras so much deposited to her credit
in the bank of health. If she draws out
more than she puts in she will soon over-
draw her account. An over-drawn account
in the bank of health means one of two
things a life of hopeless suffering or an
early death.
The woman who neglects her health in a
womanly way is making big drafts on her
account with the bank of health and will
soon be a physical bankrupt. Disorders of
this description wreck a woman's general
health quicker than anything else in the
world. They soon transform a healthy
happy amiable woman into a weak sickly
fretfill and despondent invalid. They ut-
terly unfit a woman for wifehood or mother-
hood. For all disorders of this nature Dr.
Pierce’s Favorite Prescription is the best
of all medicines. It acts directly on the
delicate and important organs concerned
in maternity giving them health strength
vigor and elasticity. It relieves pain
allays inflammation checks debilitating
drains and quickly subdues all other symp-
toms. It at once stops the dragging pains
and sinking spells the nervousness the
digestive disturbances and other complica-
tions that arise from the same cause. Taken
during the months of expectant maternity
it banishes the usual discomforts and
makes baby’s advent easy and almost pain-
less. It insures the new-comer’s health
and a plentiful supply of nourishment.
Thousands of women have testified to its
marvelous merits. An honest dealer will
not suggest an inferior substitute for the
sake of extra profit.

MAN-MONKEY’S GRIEF.'
Ohio Soldiers at Cleveland Pelt aa
Advertising Maa with All Kinds
of Missiles.
At Cleveland 0. on advertising freak
came to grief the other day at the hands
of a company of Fifth Ohio infantry-
men to the great edification of a large
crowd of spectators and the dismay
of the firm that was being advertised.
The advertising freak made up as a
monkey was perched above the door of
a business block on Superior street
yelling nt the top of his lungs and
AT THE ORDER TO FIRE.
frightening children with his horrible
grimaces. Just then a company of sol-
diers came along and filed into the res-
taurant below for dinner. The man-
monkey was too high up to observe the
sly winks and nudges or to hear the low-
spoken words that were exchanged as
the soldiers went in to dinner. Had he
seen and heard he would no doubt have
retired instead of remaining on his
lofty perch until the soldiers finished
their repast.
When the soldiers filed out of the res-
taurant their pockets bulged. Some
held their hands behind their backs
and others utilized their campaign hats
as garbage cans. All of this passed un-
noticed by the man-monkey who jab-
bered and squinted and snatched im-
aginary flies until the whole company
lined up at the curb.
The freak stopped his antics as the
soldiers stood at ‘’attention.”
“Present arms!” said a man with of-
ficer’s straps on his shoulders.
The man-monkey bent down over the
sign to see what was up. The next mo-
ment everything in the world seemed
up to the man on the sign except the
personal stock of the advertising freak
himself. As the man in the shoulder
straps gave the order to “Fire!” the
freak saw what was up but not in time
to dodge the shower of baked potatoes
meat bones pieces of pie butter dishes
and the large and varigated assortment
of refuse things left over from the sol-
diers* dinner. A ham bone and several
shunks of half-eaten vegetables struck
the man-monkey before he could disap-
per through the window. Then a
deluge of missiles descended on the
beads of the people below and there
was a grand scattering. The sidewalk
had not been so clear of people since
freak advertising became so popular
on Superior street.
A CLOCK THAT TALKS.
Designed Especially for the Sleepy-
head Who Has to Be Called and
Called In the Morning.
A Swiss watchmaker haa invented a
clock with a phonographic attachment
designed especially for the man who
has to be called and called in the morn-
ing. It appears that the calls are
spelled out phonographlcally on pieces
of galvanized rubber which are intro-
duced into the timepiece. When the
hour at which the alarm is set arrives
the clock immediately begins to talk
to the sleeper. The form of warning
that it is past time to get up may be
changed to suit the hobite of the own
er and this suggests almost limitless
combinati6ns.
“Get up! get up! It’s six o’clock;
get up!” roared the Geneva clock add
then a few minutes later on said in a
solemn tone; “Now don’t turn over
and go to sleep again. Get up. You
know you’ve got work to do; getup!”
The inventor says that the possibili-
ties of the new clock are as wide m the
phonograph —the purchaser can even
talk into an adjustable cylinder and
scold himself in any language he
pleases to have the clock repeat to him
at the appointed hour next morning.
Or his wife may do this for him. Efet-
ter still she may rig up a contrivance
that will start off at the appointed le-
tiring hour with: “John did you lock
the back door? Did you put the cat
out? Sure you didn’t orget the milk
jug? Are you sure you turned the gas
completely out?”
And so on. A megaphone attachment
will add to the emphasis of the new
clock.
