SUNDAY APRIL 19 1896
THE STRAWBERRY BOX-
Beloved.’ Behold the strawberry
box even one more time! It grow-
eth still fuller on top but the bot-
tom thereof is not Increased. This
also is vanity and vexation of spir-
it to the housenolder’who purcha-
ses thereof and a great evil under
the sun. But even as wise men
learn wisdom from the errors; of
their past and gather instruction
from the foolishness that sur-
rounds them so it is
gather together the hulls that; fall
from the strawberry box and see if
there is any lesson therein for
those who are wise to glean knowl-
edge on the right hand and on the
left. The strawberry box of last
Sunday introduced you to the
homes of the people. Today it
will introduce you to a wider cir-
cle of acquaintances and by [its
bottom and its top reveal the se-
crets of humanity.
Every man and mostjwomen in
themselves are a reflection of j;the
strawberry box. Heaped up] with
the fullness of their ostentation on
their upper side how empty they
appear by contrast when their un-
der side is offered for inspection.
Too much like those Pharisees who
fell under the condemnationofjthe
Nazarine for they made clean Jthe
outside of the platter but within
they were full of all uncleanness.
There is no station so high no'pos-
ition so low no person so obscure
no office so exalted that it is not
in some sense illustrated by the
strawberry box. To you who
study the mysteries of the human
mind enquire into the hidden
things of character search for the
secret springs of action and are
not deceived by appearances
to you is it given to know the de-
ceptions of the human strawberry
box.
Enter the marts of trade. Pass
slowly and thoughtfully along the
thoroughfares where the wares of
a city are offered for inspection
and sale. Pace with moderate
steps through the floor spaces of
any large business house. Tarry
for a moment as you stroll by the
street bazaars. It is all of one.
The difference is in conditions not
in theories. Theories ideas are
all alike-xdTiey are thoso of they
box. You wiy.-ifnd
everything delightful to the eye.
The brightest colors the freshest
prints the most sheeny silks the
richest velvets the whitest cot-
tons the finest linens the best al-
ways is on the outside. It is ever
the outside of the platter that is
the clean side. The deformities
and the damaged goods and the
soiled bolts are carefullykept out of
sight. This is not all an evil and
of the virtue thereof we will speak
a word in your ear ere we close
this discourse.
Take down the columns of the
daily advertisers. These are the
great medium of advertising now.
A livQ business man Is always a
live advertiser and he seeks the
columns of a live daily to reach his
customers through. He wants
live custom and he knows that
live men read a live newspaper.
Search the trade columns. See
how sales are set forth. Note how
the most attractive lines are al-
ways in the largest print or in the
most fetching. Watch how the
strain is put on words and illus-
trations and groupings and start-
ling headlines to attract attention.
Study the artistic measures of the
ever growing volume of attractions
to its culmination in some partic-
ulai\. It is the box
over and particular

an
The whole b™
exposition in wl
and only the cho
bition. That wl
choicest is out of sight. It must
be so for competition drives that
which is not the most attractive
out of the market that is out of
sight. Still there must be that
which is inferior and this is where
the strawberry box gets in its dir-
ty work when it palms off the half
ripe and musty berries in the bot-
tom of the box for the sama fruit
that is on top. There are good
better and best. Grades in every-
thing. This is inevitable. To ac-
cept this is onlj r honest to swear
that the good is best is not neces-
sary and it is not honest. The evil
is not that all the berries are not
as good as those on the top but that
they are represented as being so.
Blessed is that man who in his
business honestly shows the grade
of the whole strawberry box.
But it is not in the business
world that the worst evils of the
strawberry box develop. It is in
the social and the domestic and
the religious world that the evil is
most marked not forgetting a
peep into that hell on earth the
political world. For big berries on
top and a low down set of scrubby
fruit underneath and a false bot-
tom in the box there is nothing
this side of the Styx can be
mentioned in the same day
with the political strawberry box.
From the first layer that is put in
around the table of some secret
caucus chamber until the last big
red berry is laid in the middle of
the top in the convention there is
only deception and false pretense
in the political box. This is so
notorious that no one expects any-
thing else and honesty flees from
participation in a political deal as
a quaker shuns a game of stud
poker. Beloved! this box is rot-
ton. Will it ever be any better?
Who may tell.
The social berry box is greatly
in evidence. Here it is that the
art of putting the best on top is
carried to perfection for if the big-
gest berries are not red enough
then they are painted. The pre-
tension of the full luscious beauty
of the top of the box is only fully
matched by the hollowness of the
under side and the measly character
of the fruit in the under layers.
Society is built upon the founda-
tion of insincerity. It claims on
its outside upon its upper layers
truthfulness purity faith confi-
dence uprightness justice hu-
manity kindness affection benevo-
lence; turn up the box and un-
derneath the rich ripe upper layer
you find deception impurity
distrust unbelief crookedness
injustice cruelty hate envy
jealousy. Upon its under side you
find only hollowness and fraud
a solemn mockery of the promise
on the beautiful upper surface.
Be not deceived thereby.
The particular deception of th is
social case is that of the pairing
boxes. Take a couple old or
young it matters not?/ perhaps the
older the worse .From the hour
that their/Zhoughts set toward one
another they figure for points
maneuvre to deceive. With a
painstaking that would win
heaven were It spent in culti-
avting the virtues they unblush-
ingly lay themselves out to fool
the other fellow. Every defect of
character is carefully covered up.
Every semblance of a virtue is
brushed out and painted to look its
prettiest and then put on top
Viewed from the top that matri-
monial berry box Is a perfection.
Viewed from the bottom it is only
half size and awfulty’ “swunk.”
Examined from within a careful
analysis of its contents made it
is the unparalleled deception of the
ages.
He permits no side of his real
self to come to the front that could
by any possible means make an
unfavorable impression. She ditto
His private debaucheries his
night orgies his entanglements
with Impure women his love of
gaming his fondness for the cup
his low tastes his uncleannesses
of both soul and body are carefully
concealed. He pretends to a
wealth he does not possess to a
family he was not born to to a
business he does not conduct to a
character he does not have. She
is a full match for him at every
point. As insincere and far
more cunning than he she dis-
counts his deception and keeps
her true self hidden long after he
is an open book to her discrimina-
tion. Is it any wonder that they
live a cat and dog
marriage is a failure
tha beginning of sord
strawberry box of society is a
mighty numerous one.
It is so in the church in the
home in the school every where.
From the specimen boxes opened
you can discourse ad infinitum
upon the theme and find a thou-
sand illustrations all along the
way of life. Let it suffice. That
this covering of the evils and the
insincerities of life is not all bad
who can doubt. The world would
be uninhabitable for a whilo at
least if the boxes were turned up
side down. It is not necessary
for no good would come thereby.
Beloved ! This is the conclusion.
Turn over your own boxes and see
that they contain good sound ber-
ries all the way down. Also put
the bottom of your box on the bot-
tom and not half way between the
bottom and the top. So shall you
be honest at heart and in the sight
of others and there will be one
less false bottomed and false
hearted human berry box in the
world.

Without a word in disparage-
ment of the present worthy incum-

It is regretted that our visitors
were denied the privilege o' wit-
nessing the active construction ot
a “thorough and comprehensive
system of sanitary sewerage.”
San Antonio’s hospitality has
been severely taxed during the
past few days but as always she
was equal to the occasion. Isolated
Instances there were of visitors be-
ing unnecessarily annoyed by
failure to promptly secure comfort-
able quarters but this was due
not to any lack of courtesy or
hospitality upon the part of our
citizens but solely to the unfor-
seeu rush and failure of the board
of comfort to property arrange de-
tails. However there will be few
if any of our visitors who will
leave with other than kindly re-
membrance of old Santone.
Allison’s friends should invoke
the aid of Roentgen’s rays to dis-
cover the fragments of his boom.
The sewer contractors continue
to stand pat on a pair of deuces
prolonging the play in the hope of
getting a “comp.” But there will
be neither “comp.” nor concession.
Their only salvation is to fall back
on Hindry.
That spontaneous uprising of
the yeomanry which threatened
for a fleeting moment to rape
Don Jose Cassiano with a con-
gressional nomination appears to
have quietly subsided without
the necessity of calling out the
police or invoking the aid of our
model young Christian governor
through the medium of his
rustlers or rangers.
Well it is about time the mayor
and council were saying something
about the sewers. As matters now
stand the Alamo National bank
appears to be the only one deriv-
ing any benefit from the fiasco—it
has the use of something like $l5O-
