A Club Organized to
his City,
Matters of Sanitation Also Come Within the
Scope of Their Intentions. Help
Enforce Health Regulations.
Last Friday a large and en- j gladly is our
thusiastic number of our women ! to this great
citizenship
movement.
giving
that a
met in the Masonic Hall an^fl or-
ganize what will be known as the
Aspermont Civic Club. It was
the sentiment of all present that
the time for the work intended
for this Club to do was opportune
and each one entered into the
spirit of the meeting with en-
thusiasm.
The meeting after being called
to order, went at the business in
hand in a systematic manner.
The first in order being election
of officers as follows:
Mrs. D. M. Oldham, President
Mrs. T. J. Mc.Camant, 1st
Vice-President
Mrs. A. A. Annis, 2nd Vice-
President
Mrs. D. R. Couch, Treasurer
Mrs. Earnest Herring, Sec'tv.
Miss Hattie Mae Oldham,
Press Reporter.
Committees were then ap-
pointed for the various depart-
ments of the Club's work, and
active operations at once begun.
The city council will co-oper-
ate with this club and give them
financial as well as influential as-
sistance. Every citizen also ap-
plauds this movement, and will
aid to the limit of their ability.
The first work which the Club
is attempting, is the building of
an iron fence around the south
side park, and the setting out of
shade trees therein. Iron hitch-
ing posts will also be placed on
the public sqtfare. A list was
made of our citizens and a
systematic canvas resulted in
liberal contributions from every
one approached. So freely and
large fund is already subscribed
and success is assured. Our
citizens welcome this movement
as the establishment of a long
felt want in this communitv.
The scope of the club embra-
ces the beautifying of the entire
town, and they will use their ef-
forts to make clean up day, May
18th. a thorough one for this
town. To clean up Aspermont
and keep it clean, will be a slogan
on that day, and the Aspermont
Civic Club will be one of the
leading factors.
Matters of sanitation and the
enforcement, in conjunction with
the city conncil, of health regu-
lations will be another duty
which this club will assume.
Another meeting will be held
at the Masonic Hall, Friday,
May 6th at 5 o'clock. Every
lady in Aspermont is requested
tobe present, and take an inter-
est in this work. The club de-
sires the name of every woman
in Aspermont pn their roll and
we hope this appeal will not fall
on a single deaf ear. Our ladies
have inaugurated a movement
which has already caused our
people to stop, look and listen,
and the assured consumation of
their most sanguine expectations
call forth praise from every
heart. A movement of this na-
ture is of such stupendous pro-
portions that it can only bring
compensation by a general dis-
semination of the influeuce of
our civilization. Of the results
we feel confident, and we look
forward with expectancy to their
achievements.
Just Us Girls
Thursday evening, about six
o'clock the business of Asper-
mont came to a standstill while
everyone watched a wagon enter
the square, containing a bevy of
the fairest ¿young ladies of our
city, with Mesdames N. G. Rol-
lins and W. L. Johnson as chap-
erons.
The occasion was an outing
at Mrs. M. S. Pierson's for the
J. U. G's.
Miss Turner successfully dem-
onstrated her ability as a female
Jehu by hitting every stump and
rock and even turning aside so
that not a dog hole was missed.
As the shades of evening appear-
ed, the lights from Mrs. Pierson's
home beamed a welcome and a
few moments later we were cor-
dially received by Mrs. Pierson
and her charming daughter, Miss
Mragaret. Soon lights began to
glimmer in the mesquite grove
near the home, followed by shad-
owy forms, and we emerged near
the Lake for out door feast.
After partaking of viands dainty
enough to tempt the most fasti-
dious and at the same time of
such a substantial nature that
the healthy appetite of a normal
girl was easily satisfied, we re-
turned to the cosy and comfort-
able home of Mrs. Pierson,
where music and games furnish-
ed entertainment for all until the
jolly face of the man in the moon
peeping over the eastern horizon
warned us that the six mile drive
meant that we wouldn't get home
till morning.
Tired, but jolly, tte little
crowd returned "making the
%
night hideous" with bugle calls,
hoping that at no distant time it
would be their privilege to again
