NO HEART IN THE FIGHT.
There is Lot a doubt that there is
great disappointment at the south on
account of the outcome of the Kansas
City convention. The southern Dem-
ocrat t ere the party its success is vi-
tal to them aa a national party and with
their success rendered impossible by
the pint form ;nd candidates put forth
at Kansas Chy they are ill pleased.
There is no ore to blame more than
themselves They are the ones who
vote I fid Democracy of the nation Into
power And they should have taken mat-
ters into their own hands two years
ago when they saw the tendencies of
Bryan and his Populist followers to
antagonize the work of the national
government in Cuba and Puerto Rico
and the Philippines. The southern
Demociats are not wanting in discern-
ment to the negree that they do not
know that silver is dead as an is-
sue. that the people do not sustain the
attacks on the foreign policy of the
government that any attempt to re-
pudiate the war issues would not be tol-
erated The southern Democrats
know these things but they are silent
concerning them to their own loss.
They allow the 16 to 1 in the platform
against their own better judgment in
order to placate the silver Republicans
and the Popuusta. They consent to
the abuse of the government on ac-
count of its policy In Cuba and the
Philipp.nes because that policy is Re-
publican and they condemn it in their
platform while it is approved to their
own Americauum. Placed between
the necessity of doing something on
which tc rate? an issue for the cam-
paign and the yielding of the whole
ground uncouteated to the Republicans
they have accepted Bryan But there
is no uoubt u. the world that the ac-
ceptance is half hearted and that they
see no possibility of success in the
contest forced upon them The can-
didate is not a Democrat and they
know I!. The platform Is not theirs
and they know It. The leaders of the
fight are not Democrats and they know
that The victory if it comes would
not bi r.-Democratic victory and they
know that. These things being so it
is vary much a fight in which the true
Democrats of the country take little
interest They will go through the
motions praying with all sincerity that
this may be the last occasion for such
an in-.l’fierenee to the results of a na-
tional campaign. It is a singular situ-
ation in which they are placed. The
party name commits them to a political
fight in which there is no party tri-
umph even in the case of success and
they are doomed as Democrats to bear
the onus of defeat when that comes.
Verily they arc in a hard row of

The best figures in the Bryan cam-

states there is no possibility of Bryan
winning.
Since the Kansas City election the
country has grown certain of the im-
possibility of Eryan winning.

the McKinley betting goes.
The Democratic party is dead in Ne-

The outlook for the Americans in

irregularly so and defective also. This
is about the condition of the Bryan
