David B. Hi'! made one shy at the
campaign in New York and then trot
ted off to Virginia. David B. knows
Democrats are confident of carrying
the congressional seats in the county
of New York b it not the state.
There is no imperialistic sentiment
in the countrv. but Bryan says so and
therefore must the Democrats.
Kitchener is the man lor Africa it

Perhaps when the returns are all in

seem serious to the Democracy.

Oue of (he most dietluguished of
the former leaders of the Democratic
party has di'dared that "the para-
mount issue of this camjMiign is Bry-
nuism.” This is a fact that the dec-
laration of no phtfrom i«n alter. The
only addition to the active leadership
of the jiarty since ’OO has bmui Tam-
many hall nrd the changes in the
platform have resulted pot from «
change of heart on tlie part of its
authors but from the demands nf ex-
pedlem y. Tin? overshadowing ques-
tion of the present cumjeign is this:
Do the American people wish to be
ruekl by Richard Croker ami the men
discovered by that body known to
history as the Chicago convention?
Once more tlie Republican party en-
ters it national campaign ns she
champion of Eiose great prin-
ciples cf liberty and progress Unit
have brought us to the front rank of
the great nations of the world; it on-
Xers the contest under the leadership
of William McKinley one of the pur-
est and wisest cf a long line of illus-
trious statesmen: it wagiw unrelenting
warfare against ttie party that b.is de-
clared for a policy of reaction—that
advocates principles shat would de-
moralize < ur industries and tarnisA i iir
national honor.
The young men of the country shoii>l
feel a peculiar Interest in the results
of this campaign. If the seeds of
folly are to be sown it is they who
must reap the fruits. If this nation
is to listen to evil counsels and de-
part from tlie path of duty and pro-
gress tliat it has kept for over a huu-
ured years if it is to adopt a policy of
reaction if it is to stoop to dishonor
if it is to puss into the throes of class
warfare the baneful results will fall
with greatest weight net upon the
present but. upon the gen-
ereaiicns thru are to come. The
vast army of young men who are to
cast their first presidential votes this
fall should therefore take an active
part in the struggle now in progress.
To secure .-.his result tlie First Veters'
Republican league has lieen formed
and is engaged in organizing the first
voters in till the states. The plan of
the work is as follows: Each local
league when organized shall arrange
for regular meetings appoint a com-
mittee cn membership whose duty it
shall be tr. make a systematic canvass
of the first voters that the league may
have upon its rolls itu> name of every
Republican voter in the community;
elect ti captain who shall bald the
members as they march in parades
am! attend meetings and on election
day see to it that every man casts his
vote. In addition to its own work
the ’ >ague should be ready to give
active assistance to the regular parly
organization. Ii is of the greatest im-
poruimu-e that the first voters tlirottgl.'-
। mu the kind should take up this w. rk.
Such action । i their part will not only
help to win a victory in'the present
campaign but it will do much to pre-
vent a renewal in the future of the
attack Hint is now being made upon
the very foundations if Republican
government on this continent.’’
