DOINGS OF THE SOLONS.
House and Senate Condoled With Sena-
tor Harris.

Austin Tex. March 14.—A resolution
of sympathy was adopted today in the
Senate on th- death of ex-President Ben-
jamin Harrison which occurred at his
home yesterday afternoon in Indianap-
olis Ind. The resolution says:
"That in the death of General Har-
rison the nation has lost a great citi-
zen a learned lawyer and a worthy pa-
triotic and distinguished statesman.”
The secretary was directed to forward
n copy of tins resolutiou to the family
of the illustrious dead.
A bill wus passed in the Senate pro-
viding for the appointment by the dis-
trict judge of an auditor for each coun-
ty after the adoption of the amend-
ment that provisions of the act shall
only apply to counties where there was
a population of as much as 25000 peo-
ple. The salary of the auditor was
fixed at $l5O a month.
The House this morning fianlly pass-
ed the San Marcos Normal school bill
and engrossed the bill making a 4-year
Collegiate course at the colored Normal
school.
The libel bill was taken up and is be-
ing debates!.
A resolution of smpathy with Hon.
Theodore Harris the Senator from San
'Antonio on the death of his wife was
passed in the House and Senate and
( alien. Little and Hllis were appointed
to attend the funeral.
A resolution of Senators Swann Mills
and O’Dell on the part of the Senate
condemning those who hung Representa-
tive Tarpey of Galveston in effigy Tues-
day night and expressing confidence in
Mr. Tarpey was passed.

Colonel B. F. Yoakum vice president
and general manager of the St. lamia
and San Francisco railroad arrived in
the city over the 1. A G. N. from Austin
this morning on a visit to his old home.
He is accompanied by A. J. Davidson
superintendent of transportation with
headquarters at St. Louis; C. R. Gray
division superintendent at Monett Mo.;
F. D. Russell general freight agent at
St. Louis aud Bryan Snyder general pas-
senger agent at St. Louis.
During his stay here Colonel Yoakum
is stopping with his wife who is visiting
her mother. Mrs. W. A. Bennett at 21a
West Nneva street. Colonel Yoakum's
visit here at present has considerable
significance of local interest attached to
it. This is due to the report that the
Frisco has purchased the Fort Worth
A Kio Grande line and proposed extend-
ing the line to Brownsville through San
Antonio. Mr. Yoakum has been over the
road but is silent on the question of its
purchase by the ’Frisco although he
states that he was looking after the in-
terests of some friends in connection
therewith.
Mr. Yoakum could not be found this
morning for an interview foF today's
Light. He will return to headquarters
in St. Louis tomorrow and w»- be accom-

The Object of His Visit is a Mystery.
May Cause a Stir.

Austin Tex. March 14. —United
States Senator Jos. W. Bailey reach-
ed here today direct from Washington.
There has been a great deal of spec-
ulation as to the purpose of his visit.
It is the general impression that he it
here to oppose the passage of the Me
Fall bill revoking the permit of the
Waters-Pierce Oil company. When
seen today he had nothing to say for
publication. His most ardent friendri
condemn the action of his coming hern
and one of them stated that If it wan
his purpose to do any lobbying against
the McFall or any other bill he would
denounce him on the floor of the
House. Congressman Robert Henry
of Waco is also here. He was also
connected in the original Waters-
Pierce oil matter. Henry says he is
here on a social visit

morning Attorney Ed Dwyer presented
a surety for bail for Joseph Polin
charged with theft but the state re-
fused to aoeept him and an argument

—The three pickpockets who were
lined in Justice Adams’ court as vag-
rants yesterday were accompanied to
tlie railroad depot by the sheriff last

train with a caution of their prompt ary
rest in the event of their return to San
Antonio.
—Coroner Thad Adams held an in-
quest yesterday on Rafael Solas who
died of consumption at the corner of
Zazaila and Brazos street having lived
here twelve years.
