UNION STATION NASHVILLE. TENN>

This magniffrent station represented

tructure in the South and the most
asteful railroad building in the United
States. It is corrett in design: ample

lecorations; ■ ingenious in adaptation of

The. style of architecture is what is

rhh it simplicity massiveness and
trehgth. It is buih of the beautiful
■olitic Bowling Green grey limestone
vhiea gives the exterior a subdued as-
•eot but with a suggestion of durability
nd strength. It stands four «torl*« In
leight. The main tower rises in grace-
ul outlines to the height of 220 feet with
i finial of a bronze statue of Mercury
epresentativc of science commerce and
he arts as well as the graces of life and
he patron of travelers. The clock in
his big square towe . when finished
.vill be unique in that it will have mov-
ible blocks to indicate the hour in-
stead of hands.
The main entrance to the building is
’rom Broad Street which ha* • space tm-
lerneath for a number of parallel rail-
vay tracks. One passes from the pave-
nent on the viaduct into the loggia or
■tone porch which is supported by seven
nassive stone arches three in front and

arved and present the mosFperfect out-

$ The interior of the mkin waiting
-»om by its imposing beauty^excites the
nost enthusiastic admi.atipn.- The
harmony of its proportions leaves in the
nind the impressions of fitness elegance
ind magnificence. This hall is too feet
ong 65 feet wide and 65 feet high. Its
eiling forms one solid arch lighted by a
arge skylight of ornamental glass in the
oot. Tennessee marble is ti-ed in the
vainscoting. with a base of black marble.
The wall between the Tennessee marble
nd the interior corridorJwhich forms a
■reak in the -mtinuity of the vertical
ines at the second story is done in a rich
live or colonial green lighted up with
he snlendor of gold and capped by a cor-
lica also decorated with gold. The
rackets which apparently support the
drnidor are large in size giving an idea
■f . support and strength and majesty.
Yboy* the corridor shades of much light-
•r green are used tipped with yellow or
native with brighter golden tints.
Tigher up the green fades into a yellow
itid green which blend in beautiful har-
nony with the art glass in the panels that
form the top of the arch. The whole
fresco' work of the walls’is splendid in
execution'and gives an added glory to
« magnificence of the hall.
At the eastern end one is struck with
the significance of the symbolical figures
lone in metal. Rameses and his queen
with all the insignia of royalty are seat-
'd in a chariot of antique pattern.
Though clumsy in the extreme there is
in awesome barbaric splendor in its slow
movement. While a number of slaves
vith ropes over their shoulders are draw-
ng the chariot two other slaves follow
>ehind the vehicle one carrying an
earthen vessel filled with water or it
nay be wine; the other bearing a palm
eaf and holdiqg it as a sunshade over
the heads of the royal personages. The
whole design brings to one’s mind the
lately pomp the awful dignity and the
sic ' transit of 3.300 years ago.
Immediately above this metal piece is
1 clock five feet in diameter. The hand*
and Arabic numbers are white while thy
lial plate is black thus giving a contrast
which enabled every one to read the time
from any portion of the great hall. Ap
exact duplicate of tilts' clock rests upon
‘he southern end wall. Above each clock
is a great circle forming an exquisite
-tudy in gold decoration.
In the spandrel of the big arch on thfe
northern end Is a winged man pushing
ivcrything before him. He represents
•nergy and progress. In the opposite
-pandre! on the left the emblem of Time
is represented by Clotho. a beautiful
Grecian maiden bolding the distaff in
which the thread of life is spun.
Progress and Life work out in Time

Kfiatioii on the southern end wall.
