BAN ANTONIO DAILY LIGHT. SAN ANTONIO. TEXAS AUG. 20 1901.
SIRICI INTERPRETAIION
TEXAS GAMS LAW FOLLOWED TO
THE VERY LETTER.
Claus* Prohibiting Shipment of Ani-
malt From County to County Held
to Apply to Deer for San Antonio
Parks—Also Applicable to CireuM*.
For the past six months Park Commis
sinner Mahneke has laa'ii collecting deci
and other game for the purpose ol plan-
ing them in the different |iarks iu Ihe
( ii; of San Antonio which game in be-
ing held by friends in Ilie surrounding
counties as Mr. Mahncke has been un-
.l>‘e to have them shipped into San An-
tonio because the railroads refuse to
bring them into this county.
I'he railroads contended that it was
a violation of the game law now existing
m this slate to traii-port the animal-
even if it was for hriisting inirpoaes.
Aiivirdingly Park Uontniiasioner Malm-
eke had l ity Attorney (•'rank Wa u
write to the attorney general of ihe
itate for an official inlerpretulion of the
tow in that rase. A reply was received
yi-terday from the attorney general in
which he takes the grottml that it ia
a; ain’t the law to ship g.lae even if it
is for Zoological or breeding purposes
in the state of Texas.
Mr. Mahncke has been working hard
to secure the deer and other game which
friend’ in oilt’hle counties have Im-cu
holding for him ami lie does not inted to
10-e eoitriioe in his endeavor to secure
them for the parks. Mr. Mahncke in-
tends Io make a visit to Austin aoon to
consult with the Governor and see if
wnir arrangement van lie made for tl.e
intr<>diietion of game for scientific pur-
JIMS.
In the northern cities where the se-
verest game tows exist the shipping of
game for the purpose of preserving th?
species and for Zoological gardens i’ al-
ways excepteil. hence it is thought Mr.
Mahncke will succeed in getting the
garni into this city which it is sincere-
ly hoped he will.
It is n question umler the ruling of
the attorney general of t he state wheth-
er a circus carrying’ antelopes deer ami
other live game in it? menageries will
be xermitted to haul them on the train
from ore county to another.
This is an interesting question tor
other large eitie’ of the state which are
beginning to give murli attention tu the
eslabli-hing of park’ and Zoological gar-
dens in their vicinity.
Park < ommi—ioner Mahncke. witli the
suooort and aasistani'e of the-<• cities
thinks thr law can so lie adjusted a- to
admit of the shipment of game for pub
lie parks.

EVIDENCE LACKING.
Investigation in Alleged Poisoning of
Investigation in the Levi Wilson
alleged poisoning case has been going
on since the matter was reported to
the authorities last week but thus far
no evidence has been obtained to sus-
tain the charges that were made.
Levi Wilson colored died on June
3 and Mary Wilson his wife and also
Jack Douglass were arrested on a
complaint made by Tom Taylor a
blind negro and filed in Justice Um-
scheid’s court in which they were
charged with having put poison in
YY’ilson's food.
Wilson’s body was exhumed and
shipped to Seguin.
City Bacteriologist Campbell has an-
alysed the embalming fluid and report-
ed that he found a large quantity
of arsenic in the fluid. It is there-
fore not known whether or not Wil-
son's death was caused by poison.
Mary Wilson was released last Fri-
day on a habeas corpus hearing and
it is likely that. Douglass will soon be
released.
But for the discovery of the city bac-
teriologist it would have been neces-
sary to exhume the remains and per-
form a post mortem.
The Crystal Ice Factory has supplant
ol it* coal furnaces with oil burner* and
