WAS SCHLEY AT SANTIAGO.
'lTiere is a grave doubt now expressed
in certain quarters very close to the
head waters of the navy as to the pres-
ence of Schley at the battle of Santia-
go. The Brooklyn’s presence there is
growing very mythical and the whole
delusion growing to be considered one of
the most remarkable cases of hallucina-
tion on record. Wliat a field for the in-
vestigator of the future. Here also
will be in ward all the findings of the
court of enquiry and the confirmation
of those findings by the President io
throw doubt on the presence of Schley
or the Brooklyn in that most memor-
able engagement. As an example of th«
power of the human imagination it will
be the most celebrated on record and
the best authenticated were it not for
the pigheadedness of the Spanish fleet
in getting fonled on the rocks and the
blundering testimony of the officers of
that fleet that Schley destroyed them
with the guns of the Brooklyn. Were
it not for this unfortunate contremps
the case of Schleys absence could tie
easily maintained and the whole con-
troversy settled out of court as a meri
hallucination. What the fool conclu-
sions of the historian of the future will
be is not at present get-able but just
as likely as not he will declare that the
Spanish had it rubbed in on them so
hard that they could not possibly be
mistaken and that between the con-
clusions of the naval department that
Schley was not there and that of the
Spanish fleet officers that he knocked
them into splinters..it will be only right
just and necessary to maintain that
Schley was at Santiago that he com-
manded the Brooklyn in that memorable
geafight and as the hero of that glo-
rious victory is entitled to all the credit
of the action. In that view of the
case what wfill the Naval deportment
and John Long do about it?
It is consoling to the country as well

Can any one tell why Schley and Hob-
son have been singled out for cussing?

PANAMA OR NICARAGUA.
It is not courteous or necersary or
sensible to conclude that because
there is a hitch in the Senate over the
decision on canal legislation there U
a negro in the woodpile and that the
opposers of all canal legislation are
rauging the Senate against the House
with the intent of blocking all legis-
lation on that subejct. Since the al-
most unanimous passage of the Hep-
burn bill in the House there has come
an entirely new fhetor into the equa-
tion. and it is right and eminently wise
to consider it and give it due weight
in determining a matter of so great
importance. Better delay If necessary
the construction of the canal for a few
months than adopt a route that after
knowledge and development will prove
to have been the worst possible. So
long as the Nicaragua canal was all
that there was in sight the practically
prohibitive figures that were put on
the Panama property precluding that
route from consideration it were easy
to push for construction on that line
without any delay. But now there is
another matter injected into the sub-
ject. and the Panama canal is practi-
cally on the same plane as the Nica-
rauga route the figures at which the
Panama canal is offered being such as
to make the cost of construction in
either case largely the same. But
the maintenance of the work once com-
pleted is all on the side of Panama
and the possibility of its becoming a
tide water canal added to the differ-
ence in distance renders construction
at Panama a thing greatly to be de-
sired. The Panama route is one-
fourth of the distance traversed in the
Nicaragua route and devoid of the res-
ervoir maintainance and locks that
cumber the other route. The less than
fifty miles of Panama channel and the
almost 200 of Nicaragua tell their story
without any extended comment. Even
the oldest advocates of Nicaragua
such as Admiral Walker are found ad-
vocating the Panama route under the
more favorable propositions of the old
Panama company. The Senate does
wisely to take into consideration this
new phase of the canal question and
not hasten into a decision upon con-
struction that future experience will
not approve. If proper title can be
secured from Colombia and a guaran-
tee given that the $40000000 asked by
the Panama company conveys clear
title to all that any company claims as
to the work or franchises of the past
then it will be in order to adopt the
Panama route. Until these things
are absolutely settled it will be wise
for the Senate to wait and see what
the outcome is to be. That canal is
to be built and it is needed now. but
it must be directed in intelligence.

and greater care should lie taken in
closing doors and windows at night and

The government of these United
States has long been engaged in the
work of administration in this Western
continent; its wards the Indians have
been the subject of that governmental
education from the institution of the
government and it is now announced
that in the case of the Apaches it is
safe to give them work oxen without
any fear of their eating them raw
within an hour of their receiving them.
These Apaches never were cannibals
as some of the Philippine Islanders
are. and yet it is thought a strange
thing that the Orient aborigines are
not highly civilized and given the reins
of self-government within four years
ot their coming under the influence of
American civilization. Verily our con-

been issued the News in addition to

edict is said to be the result of a con-
ference between President Joseph F.

and the manager of the at which
it was agreed that all the employes
who were not married on or before
June 30th next be asked for their resig-
nations. It is estimated that the order
will affect about twenty-five employes
of the paper and some of the number
who are not mtrimonially inclinedare
in sore distress while others fear that
they will not be able to make a perfect-
ly satisfactory selection within the
time specified. There are still others
who fear tht the girl upon whom they
may decide will not be favorable to the
proposition and that their positions
will go glimmering before they can set-
tie upon some other maiden who is
willing to leave her happy home for
them on short notice.

OF THE CATTLE RANGE has given prominence in history to the world fa-
mous Texas Panhandle. But a few years ago the wonderful possibilities of
this region as a wheat country became known and great things were prophe-
sied for ‘"Hie Granary of the South" which subsequent harvests justified.
Comparatively recent is the demand of good livers for "Vernon Cantaloupes"
but it s come to stay. Those acquainted with this section and its ealth as a
producer of feed-stuffs. corn and cotton have long believed in it nor have they
been moving away. When Northwestern Texas remained conspicuous for Its
excellence in the face of almost universally discouraging crop conditions peo-
ple began to see reasons for the faith of those inviting them to enter and pos-
sess the land: and now with farms and ranches being bought daily by new
settlers coming In by wagon and ran three new railroads now building and
four more projected seeking a share of the general prosperity good reason ip
evident for the favor with which the territory along “THE DENVER ROAD*
is regarded by prospectors.
