Fate is Ironical.
There is in many thing* tlie irony
of fate. Take the following Houston
dispatch to the El Paso Herald:
■ Reinhardt Umbarth who died penni-
less at St’. Joseph’s infirmary Thanks-
giving day. was a son of the great Ger-
man ptiblisiier Christian Lmibarth of
Weissbach Germany a noted man of
wealth.
“An aunt of deceased bequeathed a
large sum to tlie deceased a few days
prior to his death of which he died
ignorant.
"He was buried here at public ex
penne. An administrator will be ap-
pointed tomo row.”
Dying a pauper buried in a potter's
field and yet though lie knew it not
wealthy!
The Light Must Cotne.
The Galveaton News is cautious yet
it sava:
"Some people of the local option pre-
cincts are feeling very badly if the
press of the state is to lie relied on.
But these may feel even worse later on—-
say about the last week in this month."
It nine be. The darkness of fanatic-
ism is short lived for then comes the
light of reason's day.

Th* Afternoon Paper.
(By E. J. Kiest in Advertising Sug
gestions.)
For a great many years the morn-
ing newspaper was considered and in
fact was the great leader In daily
newspaperdom. It was not only a
leader politically but financially. But
for the pqst ten or twelve years the
afternoon paper has been making
*trides with seven league boots so
that today in every large city you
will find the atternon paper a host to
be reckoned with. You will find that
in point of circulation within the city
and immediate suburbs that the lat-
ter is the one with the larger circula-
tion and consequently has a constant-
ly growing advertising patronage.
Speaking as a publisher of an after-
noon paper it is but natural for one
to feel that his particular field is the
best and there are a great many argu-
ments to prove the assertion. To my
mind there is no reasonable argument
to be made agaln-t the afternoon pa-
>er by either the local reader or ad-
vertiser. The paper is delivered into
the homes at a time when every mem-
ber of the family has leisure conse-
quently it is read by all. Again the
afternoon paper is always seeking out
the things which will appeal to all
members of the household not confin-
ing its columns almost exclusively to
telegraphic news and politics —a. is
the case of the morning paper. The
constant effort is to make the paper
a necessity to the father the mother
and the chidlren down to the one
barely able to read. In other words
the aim is to have the paper looked
forward to as anxiously as the hungry
l»y does for supper-time. And while
1 believe that the afternoon paper has
the strongest growing field. I do not
wish to be quoted as *aying that there
is no merit in the morning newspa-
per. On the contrary this paper oc-
cupies a field which can not be cover-
ed by afternoon newspapers if this
were not the case the morning patters
would have ceased publication several
years ago.

son Herald relates one:
"A raid on Navasota gambling houses
was made the other night and 42 game
sters were arrested. As soon as the
siieritf broke in tlie door the boys within
realized that the game was up.”
That was so. but. as usual the game-

A DAY WITHOUT DOUGH.
Yeung Man Finds Himself Penniless
and Does a Stunt at Fasting.
A young nan hurried into the po-
lice station yesterday afternoon about
2:45 o’clock and Informed Sergeant
Caruthers that he had arrived in San
Antonio the night previous had stop-
ped at some boarding house paying
for his lodging in advance hud left
the place early in the morning but had
absentmindedly left his purse con-
taining $l2 all that he possesses in
the world lying on the bureau and
that after searching the whole town
over during the day was unable to
locate the place hence putting him in
n queer predicament.
The young man claimed to be on
his way to California for his health
and was comjielled to depart at night.
Sergeant Caruthers told Officer Green
to assist the young man in his en-
deavor to find the boarding house ami
from the description furnished the
officer the place was located and his
money returned. The victim of this
queer state of affairs said that he
had to be without meals during the
whole day as he did not have a penny
with him.
