“The Confederate Spy.”
The greatest military drama ever-
put on the American stage is the ver-
dict of all leading papers in the large
cities of this country. “The Confeder-
ate Spy” is cue of the most interest-
ing stories ever written of the great
civil struggle between the States. The
play deals with military life in gen-
eral and the plot is prettily drawn.
The production has plenty of come-
dy. which makes it the more interest-
ing and those in a position to enjoy a
good evening's entertainment should
not fail to see this great production
at Beethoven HaJl next Friday night.

JOSKE BROS.' EMPLOYES APPRE
CIATE THE EARLY CLOSING.
The Shortened Hours of Holiday
Week Enable Them to Better Serve
the Public —The Time Gained a
Great Benefit.
This week Jeske Bros have for the
first time in the history of depart-
ment stores In the South closed their
doors at 6 p. m. (hiring the week be-
fore Christmas. This morning The
Light received the following vote of
thanks from the “Big Store’s” em-
ployes. which we cheerfully publish:
Editor Light:
We wish to publicly express our
thanks through the columns of your
valuable paper to Mr. Alexander
Joske of Joske Bros. for closing his
store this week at regular hours. In
this act he has again demonstrated
his thoughtfulness and Interest in our
welfare which is deeply appreciated
by each and every one of us. His early
closing movement—closing at 6 p. m.
the week before Christmas keeps us
from becoming over fatigued during
the great holiday rush which is at its
best a trying time for ail salespeople;
makes us better able to serve the pub-
lic and is a great benefit to us in
more ways than we are able to ex-
press.
JOSKE’ BROS.’ EMPLOYES
WHAT IT MEANS TO YOU.
Few People Realize the Importance
of Good Digestion Untrl It Is Lost.
Many people suffer from dyspepsia
and do not know it. They feel mean
out of sorts peevish do not sleep
well do not have a good keen appe-
tite do not have the inclination and
energy for physical and mental work
they once had. but at the same time
do not feel any particular pain or dis-
tress in the stomach. Yet all this is
the result of poor digestion an insid-
ious form of Dyspepsia which can
only be cured by a remedy specially
intended to cure it and make the di-
gestive organs act naturally and
properly digest the food eaten. Bit-
ters after dinner pills and nerve ton-
ics will never help the trouble: they
don’t reach it. The new medical dis-
covery does. It is called Dr. Stuart’s
Dyspepsia Tablets and Is a specific
for dyspepsia and indigestion. It
cures because it thoroughly digests
all wholesome food taken into the
stomach whether the stomach is in
good working order or not.
Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets by di
nesting the food instead of making
the worn out stomach do all the work
gives it a much needed rest and a
cure of dyspepsia is the natural re-
sult.
When you are nervous run down
and sleepless don't make the com-
mon mistake of supposing your ner-
vous system needs treatment and fill
your stomach with powerful nerve
tonics which make you feel good for
a little while only to fall back farther
than ever.
Y'our nerves are all right but they
are starved they want fcod.
Nourish them with wholesome
every day food and plenty of it. well
digested and you can laugh at nerve
tonics and medicine.
But the nerves will not be nour-
ished from a weak abused stomach
but when the digestion has been
made perfect by the use of this rem
edy all nervous symptoms disappear.
Who ever heard of a man or wom-
an blessed with a Vigorous digestion
and good appetite being troubled
with their nerves?
Good digestion means a strong ner-
vous system abundance of energy
and capacity to enjoy the good things
of life.
Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets will
certainly set your stomach and diges-
tive organs right; they can't help but
do it because they nourish the body
by digesting the food eaten and rest
the stomach.
You get nourishment and rest at
one and the same time and that is
all the worn out dyspeptic needs to
build him up and give new life to
every organ and an added zest to
every pleasure.
Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets are a
God send to the army of men and
women with weak stomachs weak
nerves and justly merits the claim of
being one of the most worthy medi-
cal discoveries of the time.

KING-CROWTHER SUCCESS
OIL FOUND IN PAYING COMMER
CIAL VOLUME.
An Inexhaustible Bed of the Finest
Kaolin With the Gas There for Its
Manufacture—All That is Needed
Now Is the Railroad.
When The Light took exception’
some time since to the statements
that were published In eastern jour-
nals as to the operations of this com-
puny it did so viniply because the
statements thus made wero mislead-
ing and not warranted by the facts
as known to The Light. Since then
The Light has ascertained that these
statements were absolutely unauthor-
ized by the company and that they
were made by pipe brokers and oth-
ers to stimulate the market for pipe.
Following up this information The
Light is in a position to put before its
readers some facts concerning the
King-Crowther company that will b«
of interest to them.
This company has been in existence
about fourteen months. It lias ac-
quired by purchase and lease with op-
tion to purchase a tract of 91.040
acres in McMullen Atascosa and
Live Oak counties on which ft has
been boring for oil with marked suc-
cess. There are now In operation on
that property some 60 miles south of
this city three complete drilling out-
fits and these have so far developed
the nature of the oil bearing strata
as to justify the announcement that
oil is there in paying commercial
quantity.
The drills have been sunk to a total
depth of 1425 feet ano are now in
good oil bearing ground. The first
strata of oil hearing sand was reach-
ed at a’depth of 500 feet and through
this the drill has pushed to a depth
of 15 to 20 feet before It was passed.
The oil in this sand is a heavy lubri-
cant oil of a greenish color and of
excellent quantity.
Two hundred and thirty-five feet
below this first strain nnd again at
470 feet and now at n depth of 925
feet below It the drill has passed
through sand bearing a fine quality
of luminant o'l. These beds aggre-
gate some 25 feet In depth but the
drill is still working in the lowest
strata and its real depth is not ascer-
tained nor is it likely to be at pre-
sent. as the drills are not going down
much deeper just now. the oil being
there in volume sufficient for com-
mercial ri-poses.
The g.cat trouble in pushing the
work of th<s eotnpanv has been its
distance frxm the railroad which has
in some pleasure rein-ded supplies
ami infinitely worse than that the
water ihat has beer met with and
which has again ar.d again broken
through their pipes and suspended
boring operations. This water is
strongly impregnated with salt in the
higher levels but diminishes in saline
strength as the drills go deeper. and
at the depth of 1400 feet is not too
saltv to be utilized as a good water
for stock. This fact of itself is of
great vaMe to that country which is
preeminently a stock region and
largely destitute of water in time of
drouth. The company has pursued
its work carefully and quietly without
anv attempt at forecasling an opinion
and now feel justified in giving their
results to the public.
Of the first importance to the de-
velopment and marketing of their
product will be a railway connection
with this city. This line will be the
beginning of that long talked of road
to Brownsville and will be of immense
value to the trade of San Antonio
for it will naturally center here the
interests of the King-Crowther com
pany as well as open a valuable tract
of cattle land to this market
While oil has been the prime object
of search in the irind of the King-
Crowther company it is not all that
they have found and as pure an article
of kaolin as is found anywhere in the
world exists on their lands in im-
mense quantities. This raw material
for the finest porcelain has been
thoroughly tested by the experts in
our own University of Texas and at
the east and found of very superior
quality and remarkably free from
those other substances which usually
abound In clays of this kind and front
which they must be washed at con-
siderable trouble and expense. The
extent of these kaolin beds has been
as yet but imperfectly ascertained al-
though enough is known to lead to
the belief that they are practically in-
exhaustible The engineer of the
‘companv. Mr. A. C. Pancoast is now
on the ground for the purpose of as-
certaining the depth and extent o.
this clav bed and when the facts are
known they will be nut_ before tho
readers of The Light for'their inform-
ation.
With these developments of the
King-Crowther company on the south
and of the Macdona gas prospects on
the west and the Llano iron ores on
the north this old town ought to soon
be in the swim.

History of Old Landmark.
The removal of the old two-story
adobe or rather soft rock building at
the corner of Main avenue and Vera-
mendi street to make room for a fine
modern building by the owner. Mr. Louis
Kunkel takes away one of San Anto-
nio’s old time landmarks as this was
built in 184? eleven years after the
fall of the Alamo by the late Mr. C. G.
Krempkau. It was built as a boarding
house and was the first boarding house
erected in San Antonio if not the first
regular hotel. San Antonio had then
begun to put on some little airs and this
hostelry was deservedly popular for
many years. The Krempkau estate has
but recently relinquished it to the pres-
ent owner.
