Who b responsible for Üb?
Had Usee sanitarians seen Ub eity
at any time during Ue past moaU
they would here found it as it b to-
day. Why did It require a vbit to con-
vince them tbst quarantine was unnec-
essary?
Because Ue paper boned In Ub city
every morning. Ue Democratic dally of
thb city from whom Uese Democratic
city officials and Ue Democratic gov-
ernor get Ueir opinions as to Ub city
went forth with Ue brand of “FUMI-
GATED" on It and its columns report-
ed from day to day "anoUer case of
yellow fever” or “another deeU from
yellow fever.” aa Ue case might be.
Had thb morning exponent to Demo-
cratic opinions and statemenu for
DemocraU denounced the tabs asser-
tion that Uere was yellow fever here
had it joined with The Light in trying
to protect the city against the false as-
sertions made as to its condition san-
itarily. had it demanded an Investiga-
tion by competent sanitary authority
into the facU. had it resisted the out-
rage and resented it there would have
been a gaUering of these sanitary of-
ficers here a monU ago and thb quar-
antine would have been lifted before
Ue Fair closed to Ue great profit and
convenience of all coßcerned.
Had the Business Men’s club sup-
ported The Light and Ue sensible phy-
sicians of this city as it should have
done being organised for Ue welfare
of Ue city. Uere would have been no
quarantine upon Uta city in all prob-
ability.
Had Ue mayor of Uta city backed
by Ue council demanded as the right
of Ue city a hearing and filed Ueir
protect against Ue summary action of
Ue health officer there could have
been no quarantine for a monU or a
week for the presence of a few sani-
tary officers from other cities has con-
vinced their hitherto prejudiced minds
that Uere is no more need of a quar-
antine in Uis city than Uere is of any
other uncalled for and unjustifiable
thing.
Whatever loss and discredit has
come to this c'.ty lies at Ue door of
the Democratic daily of Uis city and
the city government for Ue mischief
wrought by a few traitors in so rep-
resenting matters to the State quar-
antine officer Uat be caused this
quarantine could not have continued
three days had Ue guardians of the
city done Ueir duty.
The Light has done what it could
to stem the tide of this senseless
cry of yellow fever insisting from
the first as now that there is not a
case of yellow fever in Ue city nor
has there been Uis year. In Uta
good work it has received Ue sup-
port of the citizens to a large extent
and some of Ue most conservative
and able of our medical practitioners
have always stood by The Light in
its contention tor Ue right.
Why is it Uat it has taken a month
to bring these sanitarians to Uta
city to discover on the merest and
most casual observation Uat Uis is
Ue cleanest and healthiest city iu
the State?
Is Uere any other reason save Uat
our city press and our city council
and our Business Men’s club and Ue
great majority of Ue doctors left The
Light to make the fight alone?
The Light is a Republican paper
and not in favor wiU this state ad-
ministration or its agents and its un-
supported protest was not strong
enough to bo fully effective.
What The Light has done is to
convince its hundreds of norUern

It was thought Uat when Thomas

good Republicans for any office in Ue

Illinois is having a serious time
over the program that ta to be adopted
by the Republican party for Ue next

Fifer has figured to more or less ex-
tent as a factor in the fight until now
but he is said to have permanently re-
tired his ambitions In Uat direction
and seml-officlally announced that he
ta not to be a candidate before Ue
convention. One good thing about Il-
linois Republicans ta that they do all
their fighting before Ue convention*
or finish them up during its progress
and adjourn to lambaste the Demo-
crats at the polls without any mercy.

Fire broke out this morning at 9:20

ney at 424 Burleson streqt complete-
ly destroying the building together
with tbq entire contents and also
damaging the residences of Charles
Martin a railroad conductor and
Fred Barr an. engineer adjoining;- to
a great extent The total loss ta es-
timated at about $3500.
The Are broke out in th* second
story of Mr. Mauney’s home which
leads the firemen to believe that the
Are was caused by a defective flue.
The blaze was discovered by Ben
Overton a grocer nearby who imme-
diately turned in the alarm. When
the Are department arrived the build-
ing which ta a large two-story frame
structure containing tw*lv* rooms
was enveloped In flames. The build-
ing and all its household effects were
totally destroyed. The building waa
the property of the States estate and
was valued at $3OOO and is thought to
be Insured. The contents the prop-
erty of Mr. Mauney valued at $5OO
were not covered by insurance and
were a complete loss.
The cottages adjoining on each side
were owned by Charles Martin and
Fred Barr a conductor and engineer
on the Southern Pacific respectively.
It was only the hard work of the fire-
men that prevented these places from
bring consumed by the flames. How-
ever they suffered quite a lota espe-
cially to the ceiling and the sides fac-
ing the Mauney house.

Mexican Nawa Item Corrected.
Editor Light: In your-issue of the
17th hut Herr Albert Ballin ta
quoted aa saying In a New York tele-
graphic dispatch that the name of
Topolobampo will be changed to that
of Port Stillwell in honor of the presi-
dent of the Kansas City. Mexico and
Orient company. I beg leave to say.
In this connection that either that dis-
tinguished gentleman haa been misin-
formed or the Mexican government
has consented only recently to such
a change having repeatedly ordered
the officers of the above mentioned
company to retain the name of Topo-
lobampo and discard that of Port
Stillwell wherever used in official
documents being unwilling to allow
that ’substitution to be made. R»
spectfully P. ORNELAS
Consul of Mexico.
(For the above information thanks!
