and as the hatter)' filed past the [ark

In the afternoon at 3 o’clock the cel

Jr. He was followed by Judge S. J.
Brooks as orator of the day. Dr. U L.
Wait taker officiated as master of cer-
emonies and the crowd was kept In
good humor by the doctor's unique
manner of introducing the speakers.
Judge Brooks delivered an able ad-
dress touching on American history
and concluded his oration with a
strong talk on the diveve evil. .In
speaking on that subject Judge
Brooks said ■
"But after the district court has de-
creed n divorce let the law take hold
of such a man. Let a bench warrant
issue fur him immediately and let him
be held over for the action of the
grand jury" said Judge Brooks.
"It is one of the greatest crimes for
a man to take a woman from her par
ental roof ami bring children into the
world only to aliandon them. It lx n
moral crime and it ought to he nn the
statute hooks
“In other words the state should be
a party in all divorce suits and the dis-
trict attorney should be present at
every trial and see that Jhe state is
represented and that all the necessary
evidence la procured."
The Judge also advocated that the
current salary of a divorced husband
against whom a judgment for alimony
had been granted should be subject to
garnishment to satisfy a claim of this
character. While he believed the ex-
emption of salaries to lie n wise pro
vision he thought it should have no
application where a man's wife and
children are concerned.
Dr Whitaker was the last speaker
of the day and he announced that the
Daughters of the Confederacy had a
booth just south of the band stand at
which ice cream lemonade and cake
were sold. The committee in charge
consisted of Mesdames Shnrdein.
