National sales put local company on map; sales total $1.8 million

CHSROKeEAN/HERALD STAFF WHITER
\ Barbara Bradshaw remembers when
a $200 a week grocery bill scared her.
Today, her weekly grocery bill for Gour-
met Gardens totals $20,000.
Sales this year are expected to be
approximately $1.8 million. Next year,
the business will easily go over the $2
million mark. Every day six to eight 18-
wheelers load up merchandise to be
shipped all over the United States.
Currently there are 70 food items
produced at the Rusk plant. Thirty
more will be added in January.
When she first started in January of
1991, she cooked part-time and ran the
entire operation. Today, the business
employs 20 persons, along with her and
her son, Howard Montgomery.
Husband, Bill Bradshaw, operates
Eastex Farms. He produces Christmas
trees during the holiday season and
otherwise contracts with the family
owned food company to sell cucum-
bers, squash, blueberries, muscadines
and peppers galore. Also, Mr. Bradshaw
sells his products to Brookshire Bros,
and Walmart.
"It's not all profit, though," Mrs.
Bradshaw said. One and a half times
your investment goes back into growth,
she explained. The growth of the com-
pany can be credited to the dedication
and hard work of the entire family,
Barbara, Bill and Howard.
Hard working like her mother, daugh-
ter, Kara Hancock, has branched out
and opened her own business, Andy's
Market & Deli in Jacksonville.
