Lisa Slagle Nicholson and Thomas Nicholson, Directors
Funded in part by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts
major at Texas A&M where she
was involved in student govern-
ment, Aulds’ political back-
ground includes serving a three
year stint as an intern for Presi-
dent George H.W. Bush. Dur-
ing the summer of 2003 Aulds
interned at the White House and
for Congressman Michael Bur-
gess in his district office as well.
Aulds’ experience in these
various political spheres sparked
an interest in policy development,
Amanda Aulds and
U.S. Congressman
Kenny Marchant
which led her to Washington,
D.C.
“I moved here to learn more
about legislation and different
types of issues,” says Aulds. “I
also really loved the city the sum-
mer I spent here, so I was ready
to come back.”
Her duties in Marchant’s of-
fice include processing and re-
sponding to constituent mail,
phone calls, and emails that are
received on a daily basis. Aulds
is responsible for managing and
coordinating the mail system,
along with assisting the legisla-
tive staff with policy and issue
research.
Working for her own Con-
gressman holds particular mean-
ing to Aulds.
“Living so far away, work-
ing for a representative who
serves the area I grew up in al-
lows me to feel closer to home,”
she notes.
Her firsthand knowledge of
the region has been an asset for
the entire staff.
“Being a resident of Con-
gressman Marchant’s district
gives me a unique appreciation
for the issues that directly affect
the area,” says Aulds. “I can
communicate these concerns to
my coworkers from the perspec-
tive of a constituent, which helps
them have a better understand-
ing of what’s important.”
Congressman Marchant is
happy to have a District 24 resi-
dent as a member of his Wash-
ington, D.C. staff.
“Amanda brings a nice local
angle to our office, which is es-
pecially important. She has
shown to be a quick learner, an
incredibly hard worker, and very
dedicated to her job and the
people she serves back home.”
