Coppell Middle School West Girls Get Technical at IBM Camp
By Jane Moore
Coppell MS West this summer
teamed up with the local office of IBM
to get more girls excited about what they
can do with various fields of engineering
and technology.
According to Cathy Douglas, chair
of the school’s science department, 25
CMS West students attended the camp
called E.X.C.I.T.E. (Exploring Interests
in Technology and Engineering). Dou-
glas attended with the girls, who spent a
week doing things like programming Lego
robots, constructing model roller coast-
ers, and building bridges out of spaghetti.
They also made bubble gum, designed and
marketed a shoe, and even built a safety
restraint for a raw egg traveling down a
ramp in a toy car.
IBM volunteers ran the camp, which
included a field trip to the University of
Texas at Dallas’ motion capture lab,
where students learned about animation
through the arts and technology depart-
ment.
Douglas, who experienced the camp
for the first time, said every day was fun
and exciting.
“This was our first year to partici-
pate and the girls and I thought it was
fantastic,” she said. “Each day of the
camp, it was electric — girls working on
math, science and technology projects and
loving every minute of it.”
The week-long experience won’t end
the technology connection for the girls,

who were paired with an IBM mentor
through a program called MentorPlace,
which will help keep their interests
sparked.
“They are going to be able to stay in
contact with their mentor throughout the
upcoming school year,” Douglas said.
“There will be weekly activities for the
girls to complete.”
This was CMS West’s first year to
participate in the program, which IBM
started in 1999 in an effort to inspire
middle school girls to see the many ways
they could make a difference with math,
science and technology.

Coppell High School students (left to right) Will Whitehill, Haley Cowan and
Matt Cage participated this summer in Camp LIFE, which is sponsored an-
nually by Family Life Missions International (FLMI), and worked with AIDS
orphans in Zambia, Africa. This summer 350 Americans traveled to Zambia
with FLMI and ministered to approximately 8,000 orphans. For more infor-
