A Northerner from Kansas!
. Mrs. Lewis called me a Norther-
ner from Kansas. I guess Lois is
right but we Kansans don’t really
consider ourselves to be North-
, erners. Midwesterners now thats
what we called ourselves. That
is, of course, if we called
ourselves anything. We even
considered Nebraska, South Da-
. kota and North Dakota as being
‘ Midwest.
Northern states were places
• like Ohio, Illonis, Indiana, and
- Pennsylvania just to name a few.
As a kid it always bugged me
that people from those above
mentioned states often called
themselves Midwesterneers.
They were obviously Northerners
and Easterners to boot.
Now that that little geograph-
ical problem is cleared up and I
have bonified myself as a
. genuine Midwestern from one of
the great plains states it does not
* mean that I don’t occasionally
put my foot in my mouth.
You might notice that Lois
asked if I were “Scalped” by
Southerners because of my
recent comments concerning Bob
Lee. Close to it. Nell McLain
wrote me a personal letter
stating that she didn’t appreciate
people running through the
“graveyard”. I don’t blame her.
She is right, and I apologize for
my indiscretion.
Mrs. McLain stated that her
great-grandmother was Bob
Lee’s sister and after Bob Lee
“was murdered” her great-
grandfather, Jack Bradley,
married Lee’s widow, Melinda
Lee.
Lois implied that I called Bob
a “bad guy” and Mrs. McLain
didn’t care about me calling Bob
a “mean guy”. I don’t think I
called Bob a bad guy.
Maybe Bob Lee wasn’t mean
but he had to be (everyone had to
be) pretty tough to survive in
those days. I guess tough is a
better word.
Maybe we ought to get
everyone together and write a
new book about the Lee, Peacock
feud.

Aerobics
The Leonard Tigers took a
giant step toward respectability
Friday night when they traveled
up highway 69 just a piece to take
on the talented Whitewright
Tigers. The Whitewright Tigers
had gone on a demolishing
expedition the previous week
when they traveled to Wolfe City
to trounce the Wolves 51-0. The
Leonard Tigers had stayed home
to edge the favored Anna
Coyotes 13 to 12.
The Blue and Gold Tigers let
the Black and Gold Tigers know
quickly that Friday nights contest
was not going to be a piece of
cake. In the first quarter the
Leonard boys moved the ball
deep into Whitewright territory
twice but failed to capitalize and
put any points on the board.
In the second quarter the
hometown boys continued to
move the ball. With 10:39
remaining in the second quarter
fullback Jimmy Hass raced
through a good hole in the
defensive' line, broke several
tackles in route to a 25 yard gain
and the 12 yard line. It appeared
that the Tigers efforts to score
might be foiled again as they
were hit with an illegal procedure
penalty and penalized 5 yards to
the 17. On the next play
quarterback Donny Blacketer
was caught on a roll out pass
attempt and the Tigers had
second and long at the 17. A 10
yard gain and another illegal
procedure penalty left the Tigers
third and 11 at the 12 yard line.
Fullback Gregg Robinson
took the pitch from Blacketer and
rolled to his right. He kept rolling
and kept rolling and then heaved
the ball up toward the endzone
and tightend Gary Taylor. Taylor
came back from deep in the
endzone to take the ball at the 2
yard line and fight his way back
into the endzone with it.
With 9:21 left in the second
quarter Craig Scoggins kicked
the point after and the Leonard
Tigers held a 7-0 lead.
The WW Tigers came back to
move the ball to the Tiger 34
yard line. Tough defensive play
forced them back into a fourth
and 16 situation at the 40 yard
line. The punt attempt rolled to
the 12 yard line where the Tigers
offense set up shop. Five running
plays later, two by fullback
Jimmy Hass, two by running
back James Henderson and one
by Doug Smith gave the Tigers a
first down at their own 40.
With 2:13 remaining James
Henderson broke over the right
side of his line, through a host of
Whitewright defenders and
raced 60 yards for the Leonard
Tigers second touchdown of the
quarter. Again the sure footed
kicker, Craig Scoggins, put the
ball squarely through the upright
for the extra point and the good
Tigers led 14-0.
Definitely not a team to quit,
the Whitewright Tigers, under
the direction of sophomore
quarterback Matt Sullivan,
opened up a passing attack and
moved the ball to the 10 yard line
with 46 seconds remaining. On
the next first down attempt,
defensive back, Gregg Robinson “Our players did a super job. I
knocked the ball away. A second am very pleased with their

amends. On the first play from
scrimmage Troy Ballard broke
for a 60 yard touchdown. The
PAT was good and suddenly the
score was 14-7.
After several exchanges the
WW Tigers drove deep into
Leonard territory as the third
quarter wound down. With 1:24
left Sullivan connected with
Brian Blanton in the endzone.
The PAT was good and the score
was tied at 14 all.
It was now time for the
Leonard boys to fight back. They
did. With 4:45 left in the game
the Tigers faced a fourth and 8
situation at the Whitewright 16.
It was time for Craig Scoggins to
exhibit his ability to kick the
football again. Exhibit it he did
by lining a 33 yard field goal
right through the center of the up
rights.
Things looked good but there
was not time to celebrate. The
WW Tigers moved the ball from
their own 27 to the Leonard 45 a
complete pass that was fumbled
as the receiver went down. An
alert Russell Latimer battled for
the ball and won. For the second
time in two weeks the Tigers
were able to demonstrate their
skill at running out the clock.
Coach Lynn Marshall, elated
with the victory, stated that,

Both coaches are full of praise
. for each other. Scott Brown,
Celeste, stated that the Tigers,
“will be the best team we’ve
- faced yet. They are 2 and 0 and
have momentum. They are well
coached and much improved over
last year.”

big and strong and extremely
tough defensively. “Thye have
that winning tradition and they
will really get after it.”
