John Chappel Remanded
to Jail Without Bail.
Wednesday afternoon John
Chappel, colored, was given an
examining trial on a charge of
murdering an old Mexican in the
Brazos bottom last Saturday
night at Steve Montebon's sa-
loon. It is the sequel to the ex-
amining trial the Italians had
Monday. In the examing trial
Monday it could not be determin-
ed who killed the old Mexican on
the front galleryv
The defendant, who had no
counsel, waived making a volun-
tary statement, after which sev-
eral witness, all colored, were put
on the stand for the state and
their testimony was substantially
■as follows:
There were t^o empty beer
kegs, one standing on top of the
other, on the front gallery of the
saloon, and, as a Mexican about
seventy years old was going up
the steps to the gallery, a negro,
who was standing behind the
kegs, threw a «juart bottle, load-
ed with water, which Jiit him on
the neck, breaking it and killing
him instantly. The negro ran,
having every apf^arance of be-
iug drunk, ant1 went to John
Chappel's house.
Several of the witnesses testi
fied that Chappel told them
that night that he killed the
Mexican. There has so far been
established ;*o motive for the
deed, and there is still some mys-
tery connected with it which will
probably leak out by court.
After hearing ail the testimony,
the court remanded the defendant
to jail without bail to await the
action of the November grand
jury.

On Monday afternoon the 25th
inat, the Foreign Missionary So-
ciety of the Methodist church
was charmingly entertained by
Meadames W. M. Stone and
Maud Morgrn at the hospitable
home of Mrs. Stone.
On the outside "Old Sol" was
sending down his rays fiercely,
while inside every one was as
cool and pleasant as could be
from the buzz of electric fans.
A very interesting program, con-
sisting of songs and readings on
the subject, '"Service Condition-
ed on Obedienoe" was rendered
with the president Mrs. 1). C.
Alford leading. The collection
of dues was then dispensed with
after which Mrs. A- H. Foster in
her gracious manner presented
to Mrs. M. E. Hitchcock a beau-
tiful gold handle umbrella ut-ing
these well fitted words, "tiie

fulness and untiring devotion to
everything that is right hasvand
always will be, a blessing and
benediction. We know that gifts

I remain with us to point the way
' upward: Mrs. Hitchcock, we ask
you to accept this little gift as a
mark of our love and apprecia-
tion. May it symbolize protec-
tion from all the storms of life
as well as the receiver of "show-
ers of blessings."
We would guard you from all
danger,
We would keep you from all ill,
W<- would crowd your life with
blessings.
If we could but have our will.
Oh, but human friends are weak,
dear.
And a hand unseen is near;
So we only ask, "God bless you,'
And God keep you thro' the
years,
Mrs. Hitchcock, though very
much suprised, tnanked the So-
ciety very graciously and read
them this inscription engraved
on the umbrella:
"To Mrs, M. E. Hitchcock,
from the W. H. and VV. F. So
cieties."
Then the hostess served the
guests, about 25 in number, to
delicious vanilla and strawberry
ice cream with angel food cake
and every one went home feeling
better than they had gone, de-
laring this one of the most
pieasant afternoons in the his-
tory of the Society.
