“Officer Mac,” the 180-pound robot, owned by the Houston Police
Department's community service department, visited with students at
Meador Elementary recently and talked about safety. The robot was
accompanied by Officer E.E. Ellis, who handles the remote controls and
provides the voice. Mac was donated by McDonald’s in December. The
hamburger chain also provided funds for a trailer and training of two officers.
The total package was $15,000. The robot operates on a gel cell battery and
contains a 9-inch color TV, an AM/FM radio, cassette player, 8-track tape
player, and a VCR unit. The city wide program has been booked by schools,
churches and shopping malls. Reservations for groups may be made by
calling 221-0656. Photo by Barbara Cowart
