The dry dock is flooded in an attempt to stop fires and filled with debris. All three ships were damaged in the attack; the Pennsylvania took damage to her gun, and the Downes and Cassin were both considered lost, though were rebuilt with new hulls at Mare Island by November 15, 1943 and February 5, 1944 respectively. The Pennsylvania, a Pennsylvania class battleship, is seen mostly intact and above water. There are flags flying from her mast The Downes, a Mahan class destroyer, while mostly above water, has taken severe damage to her hull and her mast has completely collapsed. The Cassin, also a Mahan class destroyer, is mostly sunken and lists starboard and rests against the Downes' port side. She has also taken severe hull damage. On the right of the dock is a crane and in the distance the USS Helena (CL-50), also damaged in the attack. On the left are buildings and people looking on the ships in the flooded dock. In front of the dock are two more men looking at the ships and guard rails damaged by the attack. Behind the dock, smoke from the sunken USS Arizona (BB-39) can be seen. In the far distance is Ford Island and the USS Maryland (BB-46) and USS Oklahoma (BB-37). subject: twentieth century (dates CE) subject: Military and War - United States Armed Forces - United States Navy subject: Military and War - Transportation - Ships subject: Military and War - Transportation - Aviation subject: Military and War - Bases subject: Military and War - Wars - World War II subject: Military and War - Personnel subject: Pearl Harbor (Hawaii), Attack on, 1941 subject: Pennsylvania (Battleship). subject: Downes (Destroyer) subject: Helena (Cruiser) subject: Maryland (Battleship) subject: Oklahoma (Battleship) subject: Arizona (Battleship) subject: Ships -- Abandoning of subject: WWII subject: USS Pennsylvania (BB-38) subject: USS Downes (DD-375) subject: USS Cassin (DD-372) subject: USS Helena (CL-50) subject: USS Maryland (BB-46) subject: USS Oklahoma (BB-37) subject: USS Arizona (BB-39) subject: dry dock subject: capsizings subject: sinkings subject: Ford Island subject: Selmer, Benjamin Franklin coverage: United States - Hawaii - Honolulu County - Pearl Harbor coverage: north=21.349831; east=-157.959567; coverage: 1941-12-07 coverage: Into Modern Times, 1939-Present rights: Attribution Non-commercial No Derivatives rights: Commercial use is prohibited without permission from the National Museum of the Pacific War. type: Photograph format: 1 photograph : b&w ; 12 x 8 in. format: Image identifier: local-cont-no: 2016_099_001q-r identifier: https://texashistory.unt.edu./ark:/67531/metapth1687905/ identifier: ark: ark:/67531/metapth1687905
