Senior Spotlight
Justin Ryan Minchey
Justin Ryan Minchey is in this
week's Senior Spotlight. He is eight-
een years old, and his birthday is on
October 31. During his senior year,
Justin is involved in the Beta Club,
and he is an officer. He is also the
senior class president. Justin's favor-
ite pastimes are hunting, reading,
and fishing.
Justin is looking forward to gradu-
ation so that he can go to college and
eventually get a good job, but he said
that he will miss all of his friends.
The thing Justin said he will miss the
most though is his mom's home
cooking!
Justin's future plans are to go to
college and become a mechanical
engineer. In ten years, he predicts
that he will be married and working
as a mechanical engineer.
Jim McIntosh, a good friend and
senior classmate, said that the thing
he will miss most about Justin after
graduation is sharing hunting stories
with him.
Good luck in the future Justin!

The Junior Varsity Tigers cap-

In the first round the Tigers de-
molished Sam Rayburn 71-54. J .J.
Pollard led the scoring with lOpoints.
In the championship game Le-
onard dominated the boards and came
away with a 54-30 victory over
Honey Grove.
Clint Scribner, J.J. Pollard and

I grew up as many kids in Le- achievements. And it does matter to
onard, and other small Texas towns, a few of us old Leonard kids who

and become a player too. My friends
and I spent I don't know how many
days and nights pretending we were
Schaefer or Campbell or McIntosh
or McBroom or Wallace or Burch-
field or any of the dozens of other
players that we all looked up to in
those days. We lived for Friday
nights. And when the Tigers won a
big game, well - - that was about as
good as it got.
Most of us take so much pride in
our high school and its football team,
that even though many of us are
separated from Leonard now, by
distance and by time, we could not
be much prouder of the Tigers' suc-
cesses these past few years than we
are. These successes rank among the
finest ever in Leonard H.S. football
and these accomplishments should
be remembered with a sense of pride
by the school and the town.
I suppose that's why I was so dis-
appointed to read in the last 2 Graph-
ics about the controversy surround-
ing Leonard's single season rushing
record. This controversy that you
have created has tainted and cheap-
ened the greatest individual perform-
ance ever recorded by a Leonard
High School football player and one
of the greatest in the state.
I was a teammate of the man that
holds the Leonard single season
rushing record. Archie White, in
1969, rushed for 2,317 yards: An
average of 231.7 yards a game.
Archie's per game average is still
2nd All Time in the state in 2A
(Behind only Edwin Simmons' 244.6
yards per game in 1981). These sta-
tistics were furnished to me by Bill
McMurray of The Houston Chron-
icle, to whom I was referred by The
University Interscholastic League

Barry Peirson
