1989 LHS Awards And Scholarships
Presented At Commencement
The Leonard High School Class
of 1989 commencement exercises
were held Friday evening at Tiger
Field. Principal John London pre-
sented awards to senior class
members. Justin Minchey gave the
salutatorian address and Kim Davis
gave the valedictorian address.
London presented the awards and
scholarships to the following stu-
dents: American Legion - Warren
McDonald, Krista Davis; Kiwanis
Club Student of the Year - Justin
Minchey; Outstanding Student
Male and Female - These awards
are the highest non-academic
awards given each year. The stu-
dents of Leonard High School
nominate four girls and four boys
on the bases of scholarship, extra-
curricular participation, attitude,
towards school and classmates.
From these nominees the faculty
selects one girl and one boy. This
years selections are: Outstanding
Boy - Bax Kegans, Outstanding
Girl - Barbara Kay Johnson; U.I.L.
Scholars Awards: Awards pre-
sented by U.I.L. to the students
who are ranked in the top 10 of
their class and a participant in U.I.L.

Possession
Randolph - Three suspects are in
the Fannin County Jail on charges
of possession of a controlled sub-
stance, unlawful carrying a weapon
and possession of drug parapher-
| nalia.
Arrested were Freddie Joe
I Hampton, age 30; Bobby James
Berry, age 41; and Deborah Dar-
I Icne Withrow, age 22; all from the
I Leonard area.
Sheriff Talmage Moore reported
g the three were stopped early Wed-
I nesday morning and taken intocus-
' tody after a search of the 1973
J Chevrolet pickup they were driv-
1 ing revealed they were transport-
ing narcotics.
The vehicle was stopped on
. Highway 11, approximately one-
fourth mile east of SH 121 in Ran-
dolph for traffic violations. The
officers gained permission to search
the vehicle from the driver who
also signed a written "Permission
to Search" form. While executing
the search, Sheriff Moore discov-
ered a handgun under the seat of the
vehicle. A plastic container con-
taining a white substance believed
to be amphetamine, syringes and
other paraphernalia was discovered
hidden behind the front license plate
of the vehicle.
The three remain in custody of
the Fannin County Sheriff and
charges will be filed with District
Attorney Dan Meehan. The three
were arraigned Wednesday morn-
ing with bond set at $100,000 each
on the possession of a controlled
substance, $1,000 each on the
weapons charge and $500 each for
possession of drug paraphernalia.
Deputies Steve McCurry and
Wendell Bockman assisted Sheriff
Moore in the arrests.
