Life with the paper
By David Scoop" Johnson
They were a rough looking group. To that everyone on the
square would agree.
Even their horses looked worn and sweaty, standing qui-
etly, with their heads hanging low, as they were dismounted
and tied to the hitching rail on the northside of the square. The
riders were dusty and unshaven and their spurs rang out as they
crossed the street, tipped back their wide brimmed hats and
settled down for a little rest and relaxation in the Blue Moon
Saloon.
They had come into town quietly enough The unusually
large crowd gathered on the square paid them little mind,
obviously assuming that they were just some cowboys who
had come into town on Saturday afternoon to relax and have
a little fun like everyone else.
The riders dancedand sang and flirted wi th the ladies of the
saloon. They were having a good time and they didn't see the
second group of riders as they slowly and deliberately rode
"Unfortunately this second group included. rancher froro
Ladonia and his tracker. The rancher and his group had no
trouble spotting the horses and one mule that the first group
had ridden in. Stolen animals! They said.
Excitement began to build and a large crowd began to
gather. The sheriff was summoned.- >
1 he five dusty riders emerged from the saloon. They were
serious now no smiles and gee-hawing They looked grim and
mean. They squared off across the street from the sheriff, the
rancher and his riders.
The two groups of men faced each other, tense and ready
with their feet spread apart and their ami cocked to draw.
Words were exchanged, a bill of sale was mentioned and shots
rang out.
The first group of riders were probably just a few cowboys
who’d put a rope on a group of somebody elses horses. They
. weren't very good gun fighters, or at least they were no match
for the rancher and his riders. They all went down in a blaze
of gun fire that lasted only a few minutes;
They were not quiters though One tough fellow was not
killed in the gun fire. As he was being dragged off to the
waiting gallows for some quick western justice one of his
partners, who had ventured to one of the rooms upstairs in the
saloon rushed into the street and unloaded his six shooter into
the ranchers tracker.
The late arriving would be nf hter uickl m t ith
hail of lead that left him lying in the sree with Ms compan-
ions.
A few minutes later the lone surviving horse thief swung
from the gallows and things got back to normal on the Leonard
Square.
The afore mention scene ' t 11 rt of the 110th
annual Leonard Picnic celebration that culminated Saturday,
a group from Ladonia. 8EP 1 >
Over a 1,000 people gathered on the squae Saturday for the
day long activities that included over thirty crafts booths,
horseshoe and checker tournaments, dancing and singing and
the annual Volunteer Firemen's Barbecue that served over
600 people.
It was a fine time.
Old Glory” Needs You!
For the National Headquarter
Monthly Publication for Post
Commanders and Post Adjutants
for the American Legion, the Na-
tional Commander, Mr. H.F.
"Sparky" Gierke, wrote an article
entitled "Old Glory" Needs You!
In the article Mr. Gierke cited
some instances when "Old Glory"
has been desecrated - spit upon,
burned- and reminds patriotic citi-
zens of what our American flag
stands for and the price in blood,
sweat, and tears our service men
have paid to keep her proud, flying,
and free. He further stated that the
flag is a flag of all parties - Demo-
cratic, Republican, etc.- "Old
Glory" doesn't subscribe to any
creed but the American creed. He
further stated that all Americans
should send a message to Wash-
ington that "we the pcople"will not
allow anyone to legally desecrate
the Flag of theUnited States. Many
Legion Posts have already circu-
lated petitions and Mr. Gierke
encouraged additional posts to do
so also."
