Life with the paper
By David Scoop Johnson
I have been around animals most of my life and I have seen
them do some pretty strange things. I once had a horse that
took a liking to a Holstein milk cow. We had several milkcows
and calves and one or two beef type cows and a bull but my
horse. Lady, picked out the only black and white Holstein cow
aobeubudaXie Lady went she took the bi. ole slightly bewl
dered. Black and white cow with her. She ould drive her off
to solitude corners of the pasture where the two of them could
graze in peace, far away from the rest of the herd.
When Lady went to the stock tank to drink she took the cow
with her. When she headed off to stand in the shade of one of
the large Cottonwood trees that lined the stream that ran
The only time the cow had away from this persistant horse
was when she was being milked or Lady was being ridden. I
don t think the cow liked it much but there wasn t much she
could do about it. A foot race was out of the question.
Finally, one day the cow had a calf and Lady got another
horse friend to hang around with and the relationship just sort
of broke up.
A couple of years ago I was standing out toward the back of
our place, watching the sheep as they grazed along the stretch
of bottom land that borders Bear Creek.
There were quite a few ewes and four rams down there
ing to the fourth ram and began to butt him around I mean they
were going after him good. Wham! Wham! They were knock-

after him.
Finally the poor fellow looked across the pasture at Jenny,
the guard donkey, who was busy eating grass. One more
whack and the out numbered fellow headed toward Jenny. The
other three rams followed in hot pursuit
The picked on ram pulled up directly under Jenny, where he

After a couple of minutes to size up the situation one of the
three bullies charged in under Jenny’s legs. That was a mis-
take. Jenny, using her teeth and all four feet, made aquick job
of driving all three bullies away.
The fourth picked on ram looked pleased. I think he smiled
at and kind of taunted the other three who were obviously
upset but there wasn't much they could do about it. They
walked off a little and pretended to be eating biit were actually

them any good. The ram and Jenny were inseparable pals for
the re st of the d ay. One mo ve from one of the three bullies and
Jenny would lay back her ears and bare her teeth. None of the
three rams wanted to chance another attack.
After a considerable amount of thought I have decided that
animals can think I think the Fix r as t at ‘ t ■ 1 th

drive off dogs and maybe a coyote or two. He knew what he
was doing when he dashed all the way across the pasture to get
to her. Sure enough she protected him.

Meanwhile my research is continuing. Next week the
strange case of the donkey attacking lamb and the opossum

2-Story Home Built In 1920 Burns
The old Davis Family 2-story home, built in 1920, burned beyond recognition early Tuesday morning. The
house is located at Cottonwood and Connett Street. The volunteer fire department responded to the call shortly
after midnight. The roof fell in trapping the fire between the floor and the roof, making it impossible to put the
fire out completely. Staff Photo
