The Culture Club wfts called
to 01 der at the appointM hoof by
the president, Nov 13th. After
ft brief business session a quiet
restful time was spent in the
study of William Cullen Bryant
with Mrs. Williams as leader.
Though studying this man of
the past there was some thought
given to one of the greatest living
Americans of to day, the Presi
dent o# 'ÍOur United States."
The following are some of the
sayings of Wood row Wilson
worthy of remembrance: "Amer
ica is a name which sounds in the
ears of men everywhere as a
synonym with individual oppor-
tunity, because a synonym of
individual liberty," And in his
Thanksgiving Proclamaron he
said: "Righteousness exaltoth
a nation," and "Peace on earth,
good will to men,M furnish the
only foundation upon which can
be built the lasting achievement
of the human spirit." It was
quite appropriate to have given
mention of Wood row Wilson in
connection with our study of
Bryant since there is some
similiarity in their lives and
characters.
Mrs. Williams lead a discuss-
ion of "Thanatopsis" upon it's
history, meaning and worth, this
poem giving Bryant popularity
at home and abroad, that was
never surpassed by him in later
vears—and being the first famous
poem of America, and it*s author
being known as the father of
American poetry.
Miss Cade reid a well prepar-
ed paper on "Bryant'sThemes."
Mrs. Merrin's paper, "Bryant's
Treatment of Nature," made one
feel very close to Mother Karth,
showing the touch also of sad
f
ness all through his |>oems, still
a great depth of beauty is felt as
lie points to the loving care and
protection of Cod, and giving a
fuller understanding of t he
words spokon of 'Clothing the
i!i<-s of the fiHd." and "noting
Hie Tall of t very sparrow." as in
his poom. "Toa Water Fowl," he
says, "He who from zonetozon ,
(luidos through the boundless
iky thy certain flight. In the
long way that I tiiust tread p.lone,
will lead my steps aright."
Mrs. Ol i ver gave n great deal
of individual expression in her
reading of ;The Past." Bryant's
Poetic Creed" was given very
nicely by Mrs. Taylor. The next
meeting will be Dec. 2nd., at
the home of Mrs. l{. 8. Bowers,
the date hiving been changed
from Nov. 27.
The first LYCEUM entertain-
ment will be given on the even-
ing of December 4th.
The November feature eoines
during the Xmas holidays, hav-
ing been posti>oned until that
date on account of "Rain." The
new opera house is about com-
pleted and the manager has
kindly offered to give half the
proceeds of the picture show to
the Civic Committee on the Fri-
day evening following Thanks-
giving. Ho, everybody please
come to the "Movies" and Lyce-
um Entertainments and "boost."
