8 p. m. today under direction of
W. E. Ward. Miss Corinne Lewis

points. James Matthews, Fort Worth senior, as the most “active student," is business manager of The
Skiff, school newspaper; president of the Dana Pre ss Club; member of the Student Council; a member
of the Horned Frog (student yearbook) staff; an d a member of The Brushes, student art club.

Rural ’Phones to Bring
Observatory Dedication
Five Ranch Lines Hooked Together To
Reach Remote Spot in Davis Mountains
From a remote spot in the Davis Mountains, Fort Worth radio
men today will send electrical impulses over the rural telephone lines
of five ranches to emerge eventually in a broadcast over a state-
wide network.
The broadcast will be the dedication of McDonald Observatory
atop Mt. Locke- 16 mi lee north of •---------------------------------

School Glee Club Will
Give Church Program "
. The Sam Rosen School Glee
Club of 80 voices will present in
song "The Little Disciple," at
7:45 p. m. Sunday, at Chestnut
Avenue Christian Church. Miss
Minnie Harper is director.
Rev. Homer W. Haislip, pastor,
will speak on “Oil • Wells in the
Land of Egypt.” Men of the
church will serve a banquet in
honor of mothers and daughters
at 7 p. m. Thursday.

At the observatory for the ded-
ication will be leading astronom-
ers of the nation and scientists
from five foregn countries.
Ceremonies “will be brought to
the Texas rad o audience by Tr'u-
ett Kimzey, technical supervisor
for the Texas Stats Network;
Forrest Clough, TSN educational
director, and Clark Foulks, who
will announce an exclusive broad-
cast from the observatory at 4:06
p. m. ,
The broadcast, from a technical
standpoint, will be one of the most
difficult ever attempted in the
annals of Texas radio history.
In order to bring the dedication
to Texas radio listeners, the net-
work men will travel more than
1000 miles. They will run wires
from the observatory to the near-
est telephone line and send the
dedication from that point over a
rural telephone line to Ft Davis.
From Ft. Davis, the addresses
will be sent to Big Spring, near-
eat T8N station, and from there
be fed to the entire network.
Refugee To Be Cantor
Rev. Isaac Jacobson, a German
refugee, will be cantor at Friday
aervices at Temple- Beth-El at 8
p. m. A graduate of the Royal
Academy of Music at Petrograd,
Russia, Rev. Mr. Jacobson for-
merly was cantor in- Koenigsburg
and Dresden, Germany. Rabbi
Samuel D. Soskin will review
"East of Eden." a- novel on Poliah
Jewish life.by I. J. Singer.

I SANTA CRUZ, Cal. — Police
■ duties are becoming more involv-
■ ed and extensive every day. In a
I day here, they were called upon
twice to intervene in bird activi-
J ties. One woman telephoned that
a woodpeckers were making holes
I in her house. The police used a
I BB-gun on them. Another woman
1 complained that pigeons were
I wrecking her garden. The police
I enticed them away by sprinkling
1 grain for them.

The county engineer’s office ob-
tained the last stretch of needed
right-of-way yesterday for the 10-
mile strip of the highway from
Benbrook to the county line near
Gresson. "The road bed on this
strip will be widened from 22 to
34 feet. The right-of-way has
been increased from 60 to 120
feet.
The highway, from Cresson to
Granbury, will be laid over a new
route.
Other projects, tentatively set
for May 23 bidding are: :
Grading and drainage structures
on State Highway 34 in Ellis Coun-
ty. from Soap Creek to seven
miles west of Waxahachie.
Asphalt surface treatment on
U. 8. Highway 67, between Mid-
lothian and Johnson County line.
Asphalt surface treatment on
State Highway 121, northeast of
Grapevine, near the Dallas-Denton
County line.
Base reconditioning and asphalt
surface treatment on State High-
way 268 in Wichita County.
