Q. If I make gifts to several of my relatives, can I deduct
the cost of the gifts?
A. Gifts are made out of “after-tax” dollars. That is,
there is no income tax deduction for gifts. However, if
you give a gift to some, you may have to pay a gift tax
if the gift is over a certain amount. A taxpayer may
give, free of gift tax, up to $10,000each year to each of an
unlimited number of recipients. This amount may be
increased to $20,000 if a special joint election is made
by spouses who are making the gift.
In addition, you may give, free of gift tax, unlimited
amounts for a recipient’s medical expenses or qualifying
school tuition. There also is an unlimited exemption for
qualifying gifts to your spouse.
Gifts greater than the above limits may still escape
gift tax with the use of the unified estatesand gift tax
credit. A gift tax return must be filed to report gifts
above limits even if no tax is due. In most situations, the
person giving the gift is responsible for any gift tax due.

Obstacles set before you cause delay
and frustration in your pursuit of
knowledge. Work through these tem-
porary setbacks.
Avoid situations where an element of
danger is present. Snooping around
gets you too close to the truth.
An overly aggressive approach to a
partnership matter draws anger and
hostility toward you. Be gentle.
A day or two of rest and relaxation
would release the tension buildup.
Let others shoulder some of the re-
sponsibility.
A love relationship takes a more seri-
ous turn—sort of a “May-December”
affair. This could be the BIG one.
Just when things seemed to settle down
at home along comes a whole new
responsibility to worry about.
Never underestimate the power of
positive thinking, especially under
present aspects. You can think things
your way.
Impulsive buying habits could create
havoc in financial matters. You’ve
got to work for everything you get.
Concern for the rights of others forces
you to put your own needs away for
another day.
Working with one in confinement
brings a feeling of contentment and
happiness to you both. We need each
other.
There are heavy responsibilities thrust
on you through group activities. Sup-
port from an unexpected source
brings some relief.
Putting more energy into your work
brings important advancement. An
overbearing attitude on your part -
could create an awkward situation.
