streets top priority

Staff Writer
LA COSTE -- If elected for another term, incumbent
Mayor Andy Keller plans to put streets as a top priority.
% Keller, 37, is a Republican who has served one full term
as mayor and filled a partial term prior to that when Pat
Byrn stepped down.
During his time as mayor, Keller has been part of a city
council that cemented water needs for La Coste’s future,
put more money into the city coffers by securing a deal
with Medina Valley ISD to extend sewer lines from the FM
471 campuses to La Coste and worked out a plan to
address drainage issues that left the municipality
swamped every time there was a heavy rain.
“We absolutely have to do something about the roads,
Keller said. “It’s no longer an option.”
Keller’s plan is to hold a bond election in November,
borrow the money and get it all done.
e “If the voters turn it down, we’ll start patching,” he
said.
Other top priorities if elected for a second full term
include continued stabilization of the city’s water situa-
tion, although Keller said a recently signed contract with
Bexar-Met has gone a long way for providing future needs,
and trying to lure more business to La Coste.
“If we can attract businesses in here, the lift in the
sales tax will take some of the burden off of the backs of
taxpayers,” he said.
As for campaigning, Keller isn’t planning on plastering
the city with signs; he’ll be out meeting residents and dis-
cussing the town’s needs until the election.
Keller and his wife, Janna, have two children—Ann-
Marie and Noah.

LA COSTE- If elected mayor, Charlie Schauer plans to
bring big changes to the city, and a top priority is putting a
hold on spending and taxing.
Schauer, 49, is a Republican who ran against incumbent
Mike Perales for the Precinct 2 constable position in March.
"Lots of things need to get done,” Schauer said. “The pre-
ventative maintenance is not getting done on the streets; the
sewer and water rates have gone up so much no one can
afford to pay them.”
If elected, Schauer pledged to look for alternative water
sources and work to lower the rates to what he termed afford-
able.
“We’ve got a do nothing mayor,” Schauer said. “We had one
of the lowest garbage rates around and then they went up 63
percent; all we have to show for that are purple trash cans.”
In experience, Schauer said his years with Leon Valley as
it sprawled with growth will serve him well in La Coste.
Schauer said he began as a maintenance worker when
Leon Valley was the size of La Coste.
“I learned the water and sewer works when the city bought
them. Helped start the public works department, worked as
the building inspector and in code enforcement,” he said.
That led to peace officer certification and 20 years of law
enforcement experience.
“I just feel with my experience I have something to offer
this city,” he said. “I know how to run things on a shoestring.
Our streets are falling apart and there are ways of doing
things that aren’t so expensive.”
As for campaigning, Schauer plans to spend his time going
door to door, talking to residents and learning about the needs
of the city.
