has once again made Texas Highways Magazine “Tops in
Texas” list for 2000. The readers’ poll is conducted every year
and published in the January issue. Landmark Inn landed the
number eight spot in the top ten Best Bed and Breakfast or
Historic Inn category, wedging between the Gruene Mansion
Inn and San Antonio’s Menger Hotel.
“As always, we are pleased our loyal overnight customers
have felt at home and voted for us,” noted park historian:
Kevin Young. “It is really a credit to the tradition established‘ s
by Ruth Lawler and our staff. Two of our staff, Mary Resendez,
our housekeeper and Gilbert Echtle, our lead park ranger,
have been with the site for over 15 years and have helped keep-
things running so well. The addition of Ann Jerry as our
groundskeeper and Debra Soliz as our office manager has
helped round out the team.”
The park, originally the store and residence of Caesar
Monod and later John Vance, was developed into a boarding ’
house and overnight facility by Ruth Lawler, a long time
Castroville resident during World War Two. Lawler donated
the property to the State of Texas in 1976. Six rooms in the
main building and two in the bathhouse are used as a bed and
breakfast facility.
