BMA board rejects
third amendment to
BexarMet proposal
Michelle Mondo
Staff Writer
The BMA board and BexarMet have once again
reached a stalemate in their negotiations on the third
amendment to the contract created in 1999, after the
BMA board tabled action on a proposal sent to them by
the BexarMet board for the May 13 meeting.
General Manager Maurice Rihn told the directors
the proposal they received was not what he and the
: BexarMet general manager had agreed upon at their
, last meeting.
C “What I received has nothing to do with what we
- agreed,” Rihn said.
“We agreed to certain stipulations and they added
o to that without this board’s agreement.”
The negotiations for the amendment to the contract
F. have been ongoing for months and can not seem to
get past three sticking points that include; storage for
BexarMet at Pearson Reservoir once built by BMA,
relinquishing the $500,000 from the NRCS and the
ADWOP committee formed to oversee transactions to
show how BexarMet’s money is being spent.
Representatives for BexarMet said the '$150,000
they have already' given to BMA for the Pearson project
should not be relinquished just because they are no

LA COSTE -- An undocumented immigrant whc
stepped off of a moving train two miles south of La
Coste Wednesday, May 8 was critically injured and
taken to University Hospital in San Antonio.
The man, in his thirties, suffered a broken tibia and
was bleeding profusely from his leg and elbow when
Medina Valley EMS officials arrived at 10:13 a.m.
Administrator Mike Farris said the man dragged
himself from the railroad tracks where he fell from the
train to Farm Road 471 South.
Farris said the man, identified as Victor Amuguel.
spoke no English so could not explain why he jumped
from the train.
He said the man would have bled to death if he
wasn’t found and treated in time.
La Coste police arrived first on the scene of the
accident.
MV Middle School awarded grant
The Medina Valley Middle School was awarded a $500
grant from the Exxonmobil Educational Alliance through
local Valley Mart stores. Principal Teresa Velema accepted
the grant on behalf of the school and said she planned
to use the money toward field trips. Melinda Veck and
her family, owners of local Valley Mart stores presented

Public library looking
for a new director
All Castroville Public Library programs will be kept
running just as before by increasing hours of part-time
workers if necessary, said City Administrator Ronnie
Rand Monday.
Rand said he wanted to keep the transition betweer
the two library directors as transparent to the public
as possible.
The city is currently advertising for a new library
director after Carole Trisler was terminated at the enc
of April. The city is requiring a GED or high schoo.

longer responsible for the construction. Newly elected
director Bill Hope said BexarMet was now contradicting
" itself because in prior meetings representatives had
said they cared only about storage, not the money.
To help resolve the issue the board decided to form
€ a committee with two or three directors and Rihn to
meet with a BexarMet committee to find out exactly
where everyone stands.
Even with the stalemate, Rihn said he felt the board
o acted on other important items and the newly elected
officers worked well together.
BMA President Larry Haby swore in Directors
Bill Hope, Harold Weiblen and Tommy Fey and then
* relinquished his position to Will Carter. Guy Cooper
remained vice-president, Brad Stull the secretary and
1 Harold Weiblen as second vice-president.
In other action:
• The board awarded the canal lining project to
- Frontier Pavers whose bid was $53,700. Rihn said they
6 have already purchased the lining and were preparing
s to start the project in the next few weeks.
• - • The directors authorized Rihn to buy a new
excavator.
• The building of the Natalia Canal Reservoir was
approved.
