Sports Whirl
The power of positive thinking
works just fine in pitching. . .
especially when you have a
humming fast ball to go with it.
Ask Bob Gibson of the St.
Louis Cardinals, who has won
ten games in a row. He seems to
be as fast as ever and he he
certainly has a positive attiude
toward pitching.
“Who says you have to lose?”
He wanted to know after posting
his tenth in a row last night, a 3
to 2 squeaker over the Houston
Astros. Then he added: “I
guess you do, but I don’t spend
any of my time thinking about
it.”
Gibson was asked if he got
any satisfaction out of silencing
those who had criticized him
earlier in the season when he
lost his first five games. He was
quick with his reply.
“When you win ten games in a
row,” he said, “You don’t have
any critics.”
Linebacker Dan Conners of
the Oakland Raiders, who had
played out his option, has signed
a 1972 contract. However, wide
receiver Rod Sherman still
hasn’t reported to the Raider
camp in Santa Rosa, California.
Tom McMillen, the 6-11 center
of the University of Maryland
team, has been named to the
United States Olympic
Basketball Squad. He is
replacing Swen Nater of UCLA,
who quit the team yesterday.
McMillen will join the squad in
Honolulu tomorrow.
The Senate passed a bill to
strike commemorative medals
for the late Jim Thorpe, the
great all-around Indian athlete
who won the Decathlon and
Pentathlon at the 1912 Olympics
in Stockholdm.
Thorpe was forced to return
his medals after charges were
made that he had forfeited his
amateur standing by playing
semi-pro baseball before the
games.
He was named as the out-
standing athlete of the first half
of century in a poll by the
Associated Press two decades
ago.
He played professional
football and baseball and also
starred at the Carlisle Institute
in football, baseball and track.
From Bayona, Spain comes
'word that the 1st of 46 entrants
to complete the 2,700 mile sail
from Bermuda to Bayona is a
73-foot American ketch. It was
skippered by Kenneth Demuse
of San Francisco. It crossed the
finish line today. The race is
ratracing the route taken by
Christopher Columbus on his
way back to Spain after
discovering America.
ALASKA is in the spotlight
with Sen. Mike Gravel pre-
senting himself for the vice-
presidential nomination at
the Democratic convention
in Miami Beach, Fla.
