Tom, Victim:
After Couple
Guys ’Shoot
Off Mouths"
WASHINGTON (AP) —
Columnist Jack Anderson has
retracted his allegation that he
had found records showing Sen.
Thomas F. Eagleton had been
| arrested several times for
drunken or reckless driving.
J Anderson met with Eagleton
for more than half an hour, then
took back his story “in total.”
He said his investigations now
show Eagleton was never
arrested on such charges.
The retraction came as An-
derson was severely criticized
by Sen. Barry Goldwater, R-
Ariz., and The Washington Post.
Goldwater said on the Senate
floor that Anderson “was forced
to admit to total irrespon-
sibility” and has done grave
harm to other journalists. The
Post, which often disagrees
with Goldwater on other issues,
said in an editorial that “the
Anderson performance has
been a reckless and wholly
regretable excursion into the
worst kind of “journalism’.”
I What Anderson retracted was
his story of last Thursday, when
he said in a radio broadcast that
he had located photostatic
copies of arrest records
showing that Eagleton had been
cited a half-dozen times for
drunken or reckless driving.
Eagleton called it “a dam-
nable lie” and said he had never
so much as been stopped and
asked to walk a straight line.
Anderson told newsmen that he
did not have the documents, but
had been told about them a
source who had seen them in the
hands of a former Missouri
highway patrolman.
The source turned out to be
Washington banker True Davis,
who said he didn’t know if the
photostats he saw in 1968 were
genuine or not. He said he didn’t
know who it was who had shown
them to him and never expected
Anderson to publicize the
matter without checking it
further.
Delegation
Asks Hwy. 77
Widening
Waxahachie city, school,
county and Chamber of Com-
merce officials has presented a
request to the Texas Highway
Commission in Austin for ad-
vance planning and buying of
right-of-way on U.S. 77 from La
Vista Drive north to the U.S. 287
by-pass.
Facts given the state highway
commission pertained to the
physical features of U.S. 77, the
exisiting development,
proposed development, safety,
high priority of needs; city’s
willingness to cooperate and
share in the cost • of con-
struction.
U.S. 77 is now a two-lane high-
way and plans are to widen it to
four-lanes due to the heavy
traffic generated by WHS and
the various developments
besides the U.S. 287 by-pass.
In addition to the U.S. 77
widening program, the
delegation requested the
commission to consider in the
next construction contract of
Loop 287, the completion of the
south side service road along
Loop 287 from IH 35-E to FM
Road 878.

The first thing to discount
is the “discount” price as
you see it.
Our painting job was
guaranteed for five years;
the paint’s still around,
in flakes, but the house is
in awful condition.
Time waits for no man—
and no woman waits for
time.
Excuses for most any-
thing are a dime a dozen
and worth just about
that much.
