Briefs
Governor Dolph Briscoe will
lead the Texas delegation to the
democratic national “mini-
convention” later this year but
the group will include a number
of liberals as well as the
governor’s conservative
followers.
The Texas Republican
Convention has written its state
platform, taking time out to
criticize President Ford for
failing to follow what the
Texans call the Basic Con-
servative Principles of the
party.
-----The Raza Unida party of
Texas will hold its state con-
vention in Houston Saturday
and Sunday. The convention
opened yesterday to comply
with state law but then recessed
until the weekend.
Committee of the Ennis
Chamber of Commerce
yesterday afternoon held an
extremely important meeting
on highway matters, the session
also including disclosure that
Ennis Airport is to be one of the
finest, with improvement work
there due to start in December.
Chairman Bill Rider was out
of the city and in his stead
Chamber Mgr. Jack McKay
presided over the meeting.
A vital motion adopted was
made by Chamber President
Jerry McCarty that, in the
matter of highways, No. 1
priority is Highway 34 from the
vicinity of Avalon, at Road Dist.
16 line, east to business routes
75 and 287 in Ennis.
This would extend 34 up
Avenue A to Business Routes
287 and 75 and would entail an
underpass or overpass
(whichever is the most
feasible) over the Southern
Pacific Railway.
City Mgr. Hayden Routh
reported that the utilities have
been removed, in the city of
Ennis on 287 by Lone Star,
TP&L, SW Bell, and the city of
Ennis plans to remove theirs by
the spring of 1975. This will
clear all right-of-way of
utilities, from Clay Street west
of the Ennis city limits.
All right-of-way has been
purchased to Robinson Creek,
just east of LaDart’s
Restaurant at Reagor Springs
on 287 (in the No. 2 priority, for
four-laning 287). This project is
287 west from Clay Street . to
Robinson Creek in the Reagor
Springs community.
Then the No. 3 priority item is
the bypass in the first segment
here from S. Clay to Highway
34, east of Highway 287, This
