JOHN YATES ASSAULTED
BY FOOTPADS RECENTLY
IN A SERIOUS CONDITION
John YateB an aged machinist and tool maker of Philadelphia
who has made San Antonio his home for the paat year is lying at
the city hospital in a critical condition suffering from a complica-
tion of pneumonia and a terrible beating which was administered to
him on the night of January 9 or to in the neighborhood of the Sun-
set depot. '. ‘
The police found Yates at that time in the refr of the depot in
an unconscious condition. •••**
His pockets were turned inside out and his body was covered
with bruises. He was at once sint to tha city hospital for treatment.
As a result of the exposure pneumonia set in a few days ago and
the aged sufferer has gradually sank up to tpday. Steward Daniels
of the city hospital stated this morning that it would be only a ques-
tion of a day or so before Vates would die.
The steward is firm in the belief tbit Yates was attacked by
tramps who after robbing him of his money beat him into insensi-
bility and left him for dead. _ .
The old man had only just returned from Alice Texas where he
was working on some machinery at that pl«e. and as he saved his
money he had it with him at the tifne of the assault.
For the past year Yates has been a patient off and on at the city
hospital as a sufferer with chronic rheumatism. When able to
work Yates would find steady employment and would only seek the
hospital when sick. Steward Daniels states that the man is a splen-
did machinist and was worthy in every way
Steward Daniels has notified relatives of Yates at Philadelphia
of his condition and has asked for instructions on the final disposi-
I tion of the remains when death occurs.
